  1. Mine has the tear right above the fan as well. It's interesting they all fail right there, perhaps that rubber used was a poor choice. I do live in a hot dry place (Phoenix).
  2. My car was awsome at the track a couple weekends ago. Even though it was very hot (92) the car ran cool even with long sessions. I ran two sessions back to back even and with the exception of a brake wear light coming on I had no issues at all. About 4 days later I noticed a few spots on the garage floor. Inspection under the car didn't reveal anything. A few days later I saw it again under the car, this time I saw the residue and even a wet drop hanging off a hose on the driver's side. The leak was closer to the engine than the descriotion of the expansion tank leaks. So I took it to the dealer this morning. They called me back a few min ago. It's the water pump. I'm going to have a few of the hoses replaced while they are in there. I also have the car scheduled to have the new headers and mufflers installed this Friday. I think she likes the attention though. <_<
  3. I was told that one issue is that it has less surface area than the stock filter element. I assumed that to mean that it is more restrictive because of this. No personal experience myself though. Nice project you have there btw. :)
  4. I expect to have to replace mine soon. I figure I'll replace the flywheel with a lightened one while I'm in there. Noone has mentioned it, is it not a popular mod for the 996? I'm so excited, my JIC coil-overs & H&R rear sway bar are going to be installed this Friday and my first trackday with this car is Saturday. -Shawn
  5. Nice article. So add a bit of toe-in and a supercharger for power oversteer and I'll be happy. :notworthy:
  6. After adding 19" wheels/tires, I made my understeer much much worse! I'm looking into suspensions options now and will get an alignment once the suspension parts are installed. First thing that comes to my mind is to reduce the dramatic weight transfer under hard acceleration. So far it is either JIC/Cross or H&R coilovers and swaybars & strut tower braces. But I am admittedly an ametur at this stuff.
  7. Funny you should ask. I bought this car to replace a modified '05 Subaru STi I had stolen out of my driveway. They drug it up onto a flatbed. It was found 48hrs later stripped. Subie pics Now the garage has been fully cleaned out (experimental airplane parts put away) and the 911 goes in the garage. Besides, it would have only taken 15secs to pull out the CD holder and rip this little box out. I know, that's how long it took me.
  8. Anyone have any idea what it might be? It's 3" X 3" X 1" and has an FCC disclamer on it. "This device complies with part 15 of the FCC rules...." I opened it and it has a largish Lithium battery pack. It can't be OEM with the attachment being velcro and the wires to it have black tape on them although this car had a poorly installed aftermarket stereo at one point. I disconnected it with no apperant ill effects to the car. My guess is a phone option added after purchase? There are some dates on the circuit board that show 1999 same as the model yr of the car. If noone knows what it might be, I'll post some pictures of it.
  9. I've used oiled filters with no issues on MAF vehicles for years now. I just try to not overdue the oil and I always leave the filter out of the car/truck overnight after cleaning on some newspaper to let any excees oil run/drip out of it.
  10. 67K miles here, daily driver. (had it for the past 3K miles) Mine runs a bit rougher at idle without the air compressor on but I assume that is because with the AC off the idle speed is a bit lower. Not seen any check engine light thus far.
  11. I'm still waiting for my Fabspeed parts to arrive. Been on order now for several weeks. Delayed due to Fabspeed moving to a new location. (on order: headers, sport cats, mufflers, intake, ECU tuning)
  12. By thw way, the new tires/wheels have completly fixed the yaw stability issue. It's rock stable now at any speed.
  13. The more research I do the more undecided I become. hehe Everything always ends up as a tradeoff. I long for the good 'ol days when I knew only a bit and worried even less. You know the "It's aftermarket so it must be better, right?" days. So far thinking Cross Competition Coilovers and the H & R swaybars (26 front 23 rear)
  14. I just had the 60K service done on my '99 996 right after I purchased it (at 64K) just in case it had not already been preformed. I don't know what weight oil the dealer used but I'll be it is too thin for our upcoming summer. Anyway I noticed sitting at a light and after being in slow traffic for 15min that it was idleing at about 1.5bar. (OAT was 62deg) The temp was showing about 190deg. It will be interesting to see what happens when OAT is 120deg. BTW capt601 the price of an oil change is inexpensive for the peace of mind you'll have knowing your oil is fresh.
  15. Use shop air and presure test the tank, give it a few min and you should be able to see the leak. At the very least it won't hold presure. It worked great for me testing some plastic fuel tanks for an experimental plane. I let it set overnight with no loss of presure. Obviously you need to stay below the cap relief presure. I would assume it is 15psi or so correct?
  16. Hello all! Finally bought my dream car and I though I would post a hello since I am new to the forum. I have two 996es in the garage however only one is a Porsche. Hard to say wich one has a better looking rear. :P Wife drives a slightly modified 325i (5spd). Yes I know the chromed wheels are fugly, new wheels will be ordered soon. Oh yea btw :renntech: -Shawn
  17. I've looked throught the forums but still can't find where the wheel/tire size FAQ is posted? Sorry to be a pain. :S I'm asking because it sure seems like there are more 19" wheels availible than there is 18" and I'd like to see what tires would work for my '99 C2 assuming a 19" wheel.
  18. Hello all! I recently purchased a used '99 C2 with a 6spd. My previous car had been stolen and I had always wanted a 911 so... My previous couple cars had all been Subaru Impezas (Subie and bike) with the last one being quite well modded. (310awhp) I had done a couple track days with it and it was an absolute blast! She was found 48hrs after being flat-bedded from my driveway. :( Recovered Subie Anyway on to the question, my 996 has 65K miles and seems stock other than the hack job someone did to the sound system. (what they did in the door panels and to the stock harness connectors should be criminal!) At speed (70mph+) and under hard acceleration the car feels unstable. Turn-in feels good and quick but then for lack of a better way to describe it, it feels like "bow steer". Excessive roll in the body that tightens the turn suddenly. Under hard acceleration there seems to be a large abount of weight shift. I know there is one serious issue I need to resolve, the tires are currently mismatched and will be replaced once I settle on what new wheels to get. Currently it has Front: Continental 225 40 R18 and Rear: Capital 265 35 R 18. Alignment may also be an issue as it seems to wander a bit on the highway at speed. Or perhaps it was setup for track. :clapping: I do have Fabspeed headers, cats & mufflers on order and will have the Motronic tuned on the dyno. I'll post before and after torque curves once they are installed. So am I just use to the AWD and very rigid chassis of the Subaru or is my 996 in need of some serious upgrades?
  19. Would the Mich Pilot Sports happen to be one of the tires that would fit without rubbing? Also what tire size would be best for those wheels? (Front: 8 x 18 offset 50/52 mm Rear: 11 x 18 offset 63 mm) Thanks! -Shawn '99 911 C2 6spd
