Oil Consumption - On going Saga: Porsche Marbella

Recommended Posts

Right, had car for 12 months now and oil consumption "settled down" to 750ml per 1,000Km. Current mileage is 25,500 Km.

Garage are saying this consumption is high BUT within Porsche limits. They are aware I drive the car hard.

Is there in fact an official Porsche guideline/range etc for acceptable oil consumption....??

Mechanic confirmed no leaks evident from underneath ramp inspection and told me any combustion problems would appear with red light on dashboard (!?) when I mentioned phrases such as porous cylinder liner & faulty oil separator...

Any thoughts ladies and gentlemen, would be greatly appreciated, as I am thinking of selling and getting me an 'RS4!!?

Personally, I would not accept it. However, to help protect yourself, and I am assuming you are under warranty, I would make sure each and every quart of oil you have to add is documented at the dealer with the number of miles driven. It will be a pain in the *** at times, but getting a service order showing that the dealer acknowledges the oil loss may help protect you if an engine failure occurs down the road. It may also frustrate the dealer enough to fix it before then. JMO.

Appreciate all the comments guys, but both dealer and I know that warranty is about to expire within days...

The car was bought second hand from dealership and I was given lesser "garage" warranty from their second hand dept., (rather than Porchse manufacturer's) for 12 months.

Still would like to know if there is indeed an official Porsche oil consumption limit for the 996 3.6 engine?

I don't know the official #s for a 996, but up to the 993, the factory said up to 1L/ 1000 km was acceptable. Say 1qt per 600 miles or so.

That was high but that was for air cooled motors... Mine eats a little oil too, not enough that I bothered measuring yet, but zero smell or drips, so I guess it cannot be that bad.
