997 C2 Idle question

I just got a new to me 06 C2 yesterday and love it. One question though -

What is the normal warm idle?

I noticed that the tach needle bumps around a little and it seems a very teeny bit rough. I do not notice any hesitation when revving through the powerband though. Is this normal with the needle. When I attached an OBDII tool it read a range of 713-733 for the warm idle. Is this normal or should it be more consistent?

I searched but didn't find anything that matched my issue. Other issues were a large range of idle.

Would a potential Vario Cam small idle variation (713-733) be a serious issue? It seems to run fine other than that? How is it fixed?

Sorry, I misunderstood - I thought you had a hesitation in the powerband -- ignore my comment about that.

I think your idle is within spec.

You might try a bottle of Chevron Techron to clean the idle circuit.

How many miles on your car?

If you have over 40,000 miles you could have some carbon build-up on the throttle butterfly. If that is the case then you might want to get some spray carb/fuel injector cleaner and remove the air cleaner and clean the throttle butterfly. Especially the inside. That process is covered elsewhere here and is the same as it was on the 996 (or 986).

Factory spec is: 670 ± 40 rpm

The slight hesitation is likely the VarioCam cut-over point. There have been several discussions here about it.

My experience with these " is this normal " issues is that this may all be new to us and an exploration for what is normal, is normal. I had a tendancy to be a little careful with the " break-in" period and the one thing that really bugged me was the vario-cam hesitation. I have since come to the 2000 mile point ( actually I have had the car for 17 months and have all but 2200 miles on the clock ) and have come to realize that these cars want and need to be " driven ". They respond more favorably and are much more fun if the are pushed. Now, since I push the vario-cam hesitation point by keeping the revs high at shifting, the car responds like a sling shot and is the rear engined **** slot car that I expected. Enjoy you car, they are a kick!

PS you may find some " deiseling ", or " chugging " when your fuel tank is below 1/4 full also, happens to most of us

Thanks. Do you notice that at warm idle, your tach gauge bobbles a little. It just seems a little more uneven (both the gauge and by feel) than some of the other 996 and 986's that I've driven.
