Ticking Sound From Engine

Recommended Posts

Hi All - I have a ticking sound coming from the engine bay with the car idling. At first I thought it was a leaf stuck in the cooling fan, but on opening the engine bay, the noise seems to be coming from the altenator - it is a higher frequency that the tappet noise.... Any ideas?

Thanks,

Derek

There is a air/electric vent line that goes to the throttlebody just above the alternator (EGR Valve). This may be the normal clicking you hear. Unplug the electrical cable to it and see if the noise stops.

Otherwise, eliminate all belt driven assesories by removing sepentine belt.

When my alternator died it was a *very* obvious and *very* loud death rattle. I was near the hospital and thought that a life-flight was coming in over top of me. That is how loud it was in the cabin. Dramatic failure a short time later resulted in the bearings or brushes freezing it up solid. Totally seized. 625+/- dollars later and all was well with the world. Please note that this was a non-OEM replacement.
