First Time Engine Light

Recommended Posts

Alright, a few minutes ago, my engine light came on in my '01 996 C2. The engine has 28K miles on it.

I don't want to freak out, but I just got it a couple of months ago, and I'm pretty sure the "Check" light isn't telling me that I won a raffle. But other than the light, nothing obvious appears wrong with the engine (e.g., weird sounds, driving strangely, hiccups, etc.).

What's my WORST- and BEST-case scenario here, and how urgent is it that I get it to my local P-specialist? I greatly appreciate the advice!

First thing you need to do is read the codes that generated the CEL. Can be as simple as a fuel lid not fully closed, a dirty MAF, or oil filler cap not fully seated. But if you do not know anyone with a OBDII code readers, go to an "autozone" or similar place where they will lend you the unit to read your codes. Write them down and then erase them, bring the codes back and many members can help you with them. Did it happen shortly after filling up wiht gas or getting and oil change? Checking the oil level with the dipstick?

Thanks for your speedy reply, Izzy. Negative to all your questions, though. I've got an Autozone very near and will do exactly as you suggested. I'll be back with the codes. Thank you!

Did you by any chance fill up at a Chevron station in Castroville, CA?? Maybe they are putting turkey gravy in the pumps instead of Techron in honor of Thanksgiving. ;) See my recent post at My first check engine light...

Alright Ladies and Gents, the codes are in and that OBD II is the most user-friendly computer I've EVER used...

1) P1128

2) P1130

I erased the codes, the light is out, and now I just need to be advised on what to do for my baby. It's my great hope that one of you doesn't report back that P1128 means the transmission is dislodged and P1130 that it's on the street somewhere. I'm hoping they just indicate that I need to wash the car a little more frequently.

I await your deciphering...but have since jumped threads to "P1128 P1130" for obvious reasons.
