Hi All,

First of all, I wish you happy New Year 2008.

I purchased a Porsche 996 4S mod. 2004 with Bose system, PCM2 + GSM module "software rev. 3.0",

CD Changer and was looking to install a Dension Gateway 500 to connect either an iPod or USB

MP3 Player.

After long investigations, I found the following:

- My iPod Classic generation 6 and the iPod nano gen 3 are not fully compatible

- There is also a potential risk that the internal GSM module is not working requesting a PCM reset

- CD Changer is not recognized

- In same cases a Yazaki fiber cable kit is required

- Dension gateway is not supported by Porsche in case of issues

I contacted Porsche Switzerland and Porsche Italy and didn't receive any official position from them regarding on how to integrate iPod on Porsche with MOST bus.

Do you know what is the situation and recommendations in USA?

Do you know if is possible to replace the multi-CD with another one that support MP3 format or with a Multi DVD player?

Best Regards

Liberato

Hi!

When the Gateway is in bypass position the original ring configuration is restored, so the CD changer should be recognized in all cases. If not, it must be an installation mistake.

The first question is more interesting. The Gateway simulates a CD changer, so if the iPod is playing, basically there will be two CD Changers present in the system. Because of the extra device on the MOST ring, some head units cannot handle this situation and "forgets" to ask the last device on the ring (which is the phone in many cases).

You have to increase the number of known devices with Porsche service/diagnostic tool.

The Gateway 500 from V3 HW revision has smarter solution for this: it has two fiber optic connectors. If the Gateway is playing that will be the only CDC device on the MOST ring. And in bypass mode it will let through the light towards the real Changer, restoring the original configuration. No extra device on the ring, no need for programming, because the CDC is simply swapped by the iPod.

2 days ago I installed a dension getaway 500 to my 996TT '03 with PCM2,bose,tel,software 3.0 ans cd changer. The only way to operate the dension is to disconnect cd changer and connect it to the fibre optic cables of the changer. Then the PCM sees it as a changer and it recognizes songs names and artists....(I use USB memory stick, not i-pod)

The only way to operate the dension is to disconnect cd changer and connect it to the fibre optic cables of the changer.

That's ok, but if you have V3 panel, you can simply connect the second optical port back to the original changer, so you won't loose CDC functions.

V3 panel?What is this?

V3 is the HW revision of Gateway 500. (Its written on the bottom of the metal box).

Check install instructions on:

http://support.dension.com/downloads/Gatew...stall_Guide.pdf

(Type 2 refers to the typical installation with dual optical connectors.)

Thank you All for your response.

Now the challange is to find the GW500 V3 available with dual fot as many vendors sell the previous model.

However I will wait and see also on the evolution from Dension support on having the ipod Generation 6 full compatible.

Porsche is now proposing a special kit for 997 named musicplayer (see attached documents) with P/N: 997 044 901 70.

The cost is 350 Euro and it takes around 2 hours to install.

Anybody know if this kit is compatible with 996?

  • 1 month later...

Is it just me, but looking at the description of this device...is it really just an FM modulator?

The PCM in the picture of the attached .pdf shows that the radio is in FM-reception mode, and that preset "0" is assigned call letters IPOD.

So, the Porsche solution is a slightly gussied up FM modulator? Control of the music from the music player meaning there is no further integration with the headunit? For 350Euro and 2 hours of installation??

Please correct me or help me understand if I'm reading this wrong.
