Intermittent wiper - VW(?) relay swap

Somewhere I read about the possibility to convert the standard fixed intermittent wiper to variable simply by swapping a relay for a VW/Audi (I think) part, but cannot now find the details. Can anyone point me to the details (not sure if it was on this site or elsewhere), or state the correct relay to buy and where to fit it.

Thanks - I found page 1 but didn't notice it had a second page - doh!

Where is the relay located in the car - just found the relay tray in the rear boot mentioned in the vehicle handbook, but there is no click from there as the intermittent wipe operates. There is a click from somewhere in the passenger area so I'm guessing it's hidden behind a panel somewhere!

PS - There are other VW intermittent wiper relays on Ebay at the moment but not the exact one mentioned. Anyone know if others are compatible?

The ones I've found are 357 955 531 (No. 99 in white on it), 477 955 531, 191 955 531

This site http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Wiper_Variable_intermittent suggests that the one with 99 on it should work.

This site http://stason.org/TULARC/vehicles/vw-techn...-my-car-li.html suggests that the one marked 99 is the variable upgrade to the 191 955 531 above (which I think may not be variable).

http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/wiper.html backs this up, and implies 380 ... and 357 ... relays are interchangeable and provide the variable intermittent function

477 ... is used in a Porsche 924 but I've not found if it provides the variable intermittent function.

I spent a lot of time on this a year ago, but do not remember the details. There were 2 versions of the intermittent relay over the years. One version was easier to use than the other. Plus several companies make there own versions of these relays. That is why you see so much information in your links, and why someone said to use the part numbers at your own risk.

I settled on the one I mentioned in the Renntech link, and I listed the Bosch and VW part numbers. During my research people using this version of the relay were happy with it. I have given out these part numbers before and people were happy with it.

We will see if anyone else has a better suggestion.

On a LHD car the relay tray is under the dash, above the pedals.

To complete this, I have found that VW part 357 955 531 (has a white painted 99 on top) works in my RHD 2000 Boxster to provide a variable intermittent wipe dependent on how often the wipe is started. In a RHD car the relays are up to the right above the pedals.
