996 TT Low mileage maintenance service advice

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I have a 2002 996 TT which I purchased in 2007 with only 6300 miles. It has now covered 13000 miles but is 6 years old. I change oil/filter every 5k miles ( approx every 8 months) and change the brake fluid every 2 years. Pollen and air filter every 15k miles ( about every two years)

I was just a little concerned whether I should change the transmission and differential oil because they have been in there for six years or is this just a waste of money since the car only has 13k miles? Any idea how expensive these fluids are ( synthetic?) and dealer cost for this type of service?

Spark plugs I plan to leave alone until about 30k.

I plan on changing the serpentine belt out because I just do not want to get stranded in the desert over a $25 part ( non porsche price}.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice

Standard service intervals (UK) is 12 months or 12000 mls for oil change and 24000 or 2 years for sparks and oil filter/air filter. It appears that you are airing very easily on the side of caution for the oil stuff etc, but the sparks at 30000mls seems against what you are doing, in that the period is much greater than manufacturers spec?? Just a thought......

Belt i think is 48000mls (4 years)?? Brake fluid is what Porsche recommends at 2 years.

Tagger, I was recently in the same position that you are, though the car I purchased was one year older and had about 30K additional miles. I decided to do a more comprehensive service, including changing the plugs. If not already done, I would change the oil/filter, particularly if the car had been sitting for a while. In addition, I would change the pollen filter, as dust may have accumulated in the car over time, which the filter is now catching since the air circ system is being used. I agree with changing the serpentine belt at this time.

I had my front and rear tranny fluid changed at the same time. Cost of fluids was $60 and approx two hours of labor. I never feel comfortable driving a car that may have been sitting for a while without changing the important lubricants. I'd rather spend $230 in preventive maintenance than $12-15K on a new tranny. Just my 2 cents, I hope it helps.
