Track day at Watkins Glen

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done a track day at Watkins Glen? How does it compare to Lime Rock Park and NHIS? I will be running a '01 996 C2. Not terribly impressed with the one left hand turn at Lime rock and New Hampshire having 13 turns in 1.5 miles does not allow for a lot of speed in my car. Let me know what you think and whether or not it will be worth the ride from Boston.

Thanks

Jim,

I have done the Zone 1 48 hours at the Glen twice. I live outside of Boston so the ride for me is probably similar to yours. I have done many days at NHIS and a few at Limerock. In my opinion the Glen is much, much better than either of the other two. Much faster and more challenging.

I live right in downtown Boston and do DE's at the Glen with Trackmasters. I drive the car there and back, with two days of driving. Not that long of a trip.

The Glen is much faster overall that Lime Rock or NHIS. The back straight going into the bus stop is the fastest I have been in my car on a race track. And there are other fast sections. A great track overall.

Make sure you have decent brake pads. Stock pads will fade during a 20-30min stint.

Good luck.

Jim,

I don't drive a 996, but I've done about 25 track days at the Glen, with several different PCA regions in DE's. It is my favorite track - also driven Lime Rock about 10 days, Pocono 3 days, Mid Ohio about 10 days, Mt Tremblant 5 days, Road America 3 days, Virginia Int'l about 10 days (VIR is my second favorite). It is fast, it has great rhythm, it has a beautiful setting (village, lakes, rocky glen at the park), and of course the historic aspects of the originial track for the US Grand Prix, the first Sports Car road race in the US, etc.

Make a trip to the Glen, and Lime Rock will no longer be as attractive - my experience at least.
