Outside Temp

My outside temp readout is not correct. I have replaced the sensor/probe in the right front grill. Is there a way to re-calibrate something inorder to make it work correctly? I have a 2003 986 S.

What's it reading? Are you set to celcius?

Are they supposed to be? I've never had one that was, including current stable, Lexus.& BMW ,& Boxster (I assume).

Mine are dead-on- Porsche, Ford and Mercedes. Rental cars from Avis are pretty accurate too.

Mine is in F but it reads about 20 degrees colder then it really is.

I would have suggested that you find another car and swap the sensor, or buy another sensor, but you have already done that.

With a PST2 you can go into the instrument cluster and there are 2 settings for the outside temp. I hooked up a PST2 to my car and tried to play around with the settings, but all I got was an error message and I think it wanted me to use a volt meter.

So I am no help, and this may be a Peter Smith question.

I suppose the instrument cluster could be defective, but that is a wild quess.

Does your 2003 have as a factory option the OBC? If so, have you changed it back and forth from F to C?

Also, if you unplug the sensor what do you see?

Lastly, what is the history of this issue?

I changed sensor with another that was working correctly, it would start out moving up and then would stop before it got to the correct temp.

My car has the factory OBC, I have not changed it from F to C so I will try that when I get home.

Unplugging and pluggin back in gives the same low reading with either sensor.

This all started last fall when I took the bumper off to clean the radiators and forgot to unplug the sensor. As I walked away from the car with the bumper cover it tugged back at me as the sensor unhooked itself from the grill. I looked it over and it appeared to have no damage, it just doesn't work properly anymore.
