1999 Boxster Water Pump Failure

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 1999 Boxster. After 1700 miles I hear a loud bang and notice the charging light and ABS light is on. I have worked on several cars in my life and figured that it was the drive belt that had broken. I limped the car home and removed the engince panels to find that the water pump pully had completedly severed off the water pump. The drive belt was unscratched and all other idlers and components were turning smoothly. There wasn't a visible reason why it should have broken. Is this a common problem or could this have been a defective water pump? This is the first time I have ever seen this problem.

Last summer a mechanic I know showed me the same thing. Until then I had never seen this happen before. The shaft for the pulley fractured. Should also have taken a picture of the pump, but here is the pulley.

So now you are the second one.

How many miles on the car?

I would say it's not too uncommon for the WP to seize. It was probably beginning to fail, leaked, got into the bearings and ultimately froze.

I did not replace mine myself when it needed it, but it looks like a fairly straight forward procedure.

My Boxster has 87000 miles on it. Usually there is quit a bit of leaking out the drip hole when a pump starts to fail and you can see it on the pavement. It appears mine dripped a little but the pump has no real noticeable signs that it was going to explode. There wasn't theusual noises that would be heard from front engine cars. It broke as if the shaft is a cast part instead of a forged part. If it would help anyone else I can try and post some photos tonight of both the water pump and the broken shaft.

  • 11 months later...

Just happened to me - can't believe it. A little ping/knock on start-up - 15 miles later battery light on - then a thump.

Limped home only to find the shaft pulled out of the pump and the s - belt (recently replaced) completely off. Lost a fair amount of coolant - but no prior warning.

I need to change the pump - but the scary question is?

Did this cause (or will it cause) major engine failure?

Any prior evidence?
