top won't go up - switch issue?

Recommended Posts

Been having this problem on my 2001 Boxster S for almost a year now but I put the hard top on and ignored it but now figured I can try to fix it.

Basically the problem is that the top went down and no longer comes up. It had gone down fine and then while driving, the windows just randomly came up and the top no longer goes up. I had this problem one time before and just kept pressing the switch at the top of the windshield where the latch attaches and it fixed it. That didn't work again.

I'm getting the impression that this is a problem with the switch or signal. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Darconi:

From your description, it sounds as though one of your two latch microswitches has finally gone bad, after being intermittent. The clue is that your top worked for a while when you poked the microswitch with your finger.

Take a look at this thread by member Dan Hinkebein for a great description of what may have happened to that microswitch and how to replace it:

  • 8 months later...

Hi there, I've had top problems for some time now. Basically the top motor does not stop running when the top is in its final up or down position. This puts stress on the linkages and breaks the "red links". The roof light on the dash also does not go out. I've checked the microswitches and the control module and everything looks ok. I heard there was another microswitch INSIDE one of the roof transmissions. Is that true? And on which side is it...?

Goose:

Since your Boxster is a MY 98, you will not find that microswitch inside one of the roof transmissions, unless one (or both) of those transmissions have been replaced by the later ("B" Version) transmissions.

If they have been replaced, the former "B Pillar Microswitch" will be found in the driver's side transmission (not the passenger's side transmission as the factory manual says).

If they haven't been replaced, the B Pillar Microswitch is located beneath the B Pillar (on the driver's side).

You should also check the other microswitch on your 98, the one whose arm is located directly on top of the electric motor.

Tegards, Maurice.
