gt3 startup noise

I have a Porsche GT3 Mark 1 which I dont drive often, but when I Do it makes a rattling noise out of the engine that disappears within 3 seconds. I have spoken to Porsche and they tell me its because its a dry sump car and the oil takes time to circulate through the engine.

My question is does anyone have the same problem? And does this stuff the engine up in the long term?

Hi, I also have a Mk1 GT3, it also does the same on start up. Very annoying. No one can give me a proper answer as to why it happens but it doesnt happen on every startup, probably 7 out of 10 from cold. I believe it has something to do with the cam chain tensioners, losing pressure / tension, causing the chain to rattle until oil pressure has built up. Some of the comments i have had are 'it is standard on these cars' 'its a race engine what do you expect' ' its dry sumped' - all ridiculous, no one knows or they are not telling! Perhaps £500-00 GBP worth of new cam chain tensioners will do the trick. I will keep you posted.

GT3 Owners.... Yes, rattle on start-up is a standard 'feature'. It does, as the dealer suggested, have to do with oil coming up to pressure and actuating tensioners and valve lifters. It is not a problem. All the GT3's of which I know, do it, as well as GT3 Cup race cars.

It really is just a matter of pressurized items losing pressure after sitting for a short period of time.

The other Porsche's that rattled badly after sitting: early 944's and 928's. They used a MUCH larger hyd. cam follower and would "leak down" over time. It sounded like what most of us would call a "death rattle" but it quickly went away after 30seconds or so :)

The GT3's all use a *tiny* lifter compared to the 44 and 28. Matter of fact, I could hide a GT3 lifter inside of a 44 or 28 lifter :lol:

Hi guys, mine '99 mk1 has scored second at the world rattling starting noise championship :D

Here in Italy the others GT3s of the group did it seldom, somes never. Mine instead did it every cold start, and also a little after a track pause of 30 minutes. And when it does, the oil pressure remain at zero...

It's related to the pretension of the cam chain.

Does it hurt? I really don't know, but mine has reached 84k kms doing that...

It's really a turnheads feature, watch friends face during cold startup...

My 996 GT3 does the same thing. The longer I let it sit the louder and longer it lasts on start-up. I usually only drive mine every 2 weeks. It only lasts for about 2 seconds. Interestingly, when I drive the car for a few days in a row it doesn't make the start-up noise at all. I'm not worried about it. As a side note, one of my friends has a boxster that he only drives on occation and it makes the same start-up noise.
