Extended Warranty a good idea for Cayman S?

I have a friend who has a Cayman S and is approaching 16,000 miles. His warranty will expire shortly and he asked me if I thought getting the extended warranty was worth it. I've been a member of this forum in the Cayenne section because of my wife's Cayenne Turbo but am unfamiliar with any potential mileage/year issues that the Cayman S's may have.

He says that the car has been performing perfectly for him since he bought it so there are no glaring problems that he knows about that he is trying to protect himself from.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ken:

Tell your friend to get a hold of the Porsche Excellence Magazine, December 2008 issue (available after November 20, 2008 at Barnes & Noble Bookstores) and to read the article on M96 engines.

That will give him a lot information to help with his decision.

Also, don't sign up with a warranty company that does not have an insurance company backing it.

Regards, Maurice.

I agree with Maurice. The main issues on a used car have to be the engine. The dreaded IMS (Intermediate Shaft Failure) only seems to affect the earlier 2.7 ,3.2 . The 3.4 fitted to the later cayman/boxster uses a different shaft design and their have been no cases of failure to date. The RMS oil seal leak is more of a annoyance than major issue, most Porsche dealers will also cover replacement under goodwill. The rest of the car is in the main reliable so I would question the need for an expensive extended warranty. If you do get a warrant make sure you read the small print to ensure that you are getting value for money. The Porsche official item is expensive but supposedly covers everything bar wear and tear items.
