Change complete convertible roof from plastic to glass window

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I want to change my old roof from a prefacelift 996 to a postfacelift 996´s roof.

I bought a complete roof with all the mechanics.

It will be mounted on monday.

The thing I would like to know is: How is the rearwindow defroster wired.

The prefacelift has wiring for the hardtop but not for the softtop window of course.

Where is the wiring in the new top and how do I have to connect it to my old car?

Any experiences?

Thanks,

Rainer, Germany.

There are alot more differences than just the top itself. Take a look at PET, lots of different parts, I think the tray, maybe the frame, etc. etc. Do some searches as this has been discussed before. Check it out carefuly before you try the conversion.

By the way, Good Luch, it would be a grat change, one most of us who have plastic windows would enjoy. There is a replacement top with a glass rear window made specifically to work within the old parts, but the window is very small.

Ok, the complete top was changed yesterday.

Not a big deal: 3 hours work and a calibration.

Works and looks great!

But there is still the question, how do I connect the hardtop defroster with the softtop?

Thanks,

Rainer.

Well, it looks exactely like the 996 conv after facelift, because only genuine parts were used.

As I mentioned before, the frame, all mechanics and the hood were changed.

Thanks,

Rainer.

WOW!! that is great news. I had been told and always thought it was alot more complicated. Bet there are alot of us early Cab owners that will be looking for tops and frames. New market for the junk yards.

The rear defroster connect through one of the rear mounts, you could probably jumper in where the wires connect to the mount and bring power to the soft top window from there, but that would mean that the soft top glass would always be on when you have the defroster on, even with the hard top on so you might want to put in sone sort of disconnet switch. I will look at my wiring diagrams, but I am sure that the harness for the early cars is different from the later cars.
