What is the best way to clean my convertible top?

Recommended Posts

My 2003 Boxster has a tan convertible top with black streaks/stains on the right and left rear sides. I think they're associated with the way the top folds into the body somehow. Not sure, I bought the car used and they were there when I got it.

I went into AutoZone and bought a bottle of BlueMagic Convertible Top cleaner, but it didn't work like I'd hoped. The stains are still there and I'm ready to try something else. I really want to clean this up!

See the attached picture. Does anyone know of a cleaning product and/or cleaning method I can use to make this look like new?

very common but more noticeable on light colored tops. Not an issue but rather a function of folding the fabric. 996s and 997s have the same issues (just in different places. My (986's ;) ) wrinkles seem to be less noticeable after I treat it w/ RaggTopp. To minimize them, it's best to not fold the top when it is wet or damp. Additionally, whenever I wash my top, I usually release the windshield header fastener and then let it dry thoroughly. Once dry, I re-fasten the closer and it seems to "pull" the fabric tighter.

Good lucK :)

I just did my black top with Raggtop cleaner and protectant. Very easy to apply and appears to have darkened the top (mine is black) which is what I was looking for. Directions indicate to let iit sink in on stubborn stains and scrubb but as noted it appears to be creases in the top which I have also and did not go away from cleaning.

I had a similar issue with my top. As mentioned by others, some of those marks are fold marks and may not come out. However, after trying lots of things to remove them on mine, I had a brain storm one day that did work on some of the spots.

I wet the top down, and I had a bottle of "Blue Magic Carpet Stain and Spot Lifter" in the car cabinet. I sprayed it on the areas (again, after it was already wet as to not be full strength) and let it soak a bit, and then used a stiff brush to scrub the canvas. After a water rince and a good drying in the sun, I treated with Porsche Cabrio top protector, and it looks great. Took the marks right out, and no discoloration. (I have the light grey top also).

Like I said, it didn't work on a few of the areas, mainly over the metal rods in the top, but I'd say I got rid of 80% of them. I'd imagine a "resolve" cleaner, or other fabric cleaner would work just as nicely.
