996 fuel pump

when is it time to replace the fuel pump on a 02' 996? Are there signs that it is going bad, like the car not starting? i had a 99' with 88,000 miles when the fule pump went bad and wondered if it needs to be replaced early so the car does not lose power and turn off on me as did the 99' 996. My 02' has 88,000 mile on right now. thanks

Starting and drivability issues will be caused by a failing fuel pump. If it isn't broke... don't fix it. Try and keep the fuel level over the 1/4 tank as it aids in cooling the pump assembly and might increase it's service life.

Speaking of this, I'm getting the feeling my fuel pump is on its last legs. When I start it cold it seems to stumble and doesn't always get up to 1200rpm, then when I drive off it will stumble/surge as I get on the gas, but if I "prime" the fuel system by turning the key to the run position and letting it sit for a few seconds while I get situated in the car it will run more smoothly right off the get go (though not perfectly). Can't tell if this is the pump itself or pressure regulation.

Car is a 2000 C2
