TrafficPro Installation

Recommended Posts

I've seen a number of postings regarding installing the TrafficPro in a Boxster. What I couldn't figure out from the posts is whether anyone has installed the TP in a 2002 Boxster with the Bose system, 6 disk changer and the CR220 head unit.

I saw several posts where the changer did not work and looking at the pictures of the TP, it does not have the same "source" button that switches between disk changer, radio and cassette, like the CR 220. Anyone have that configuration?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You are mixing things.

With TrafficPro1, which was made for many cars, you need to move a wire when it is installed on a Boxster if you have an amp in the trunk. There is also the reverse wire, another issue.

I guess with $400 from Crutchfield we get more questions.

One of our local guys, Patrick, will have the Crutchfield unit here in a few days.

I'm not sure either. I answer many questions on message boards and emails each day and I confused you with Patrick, a local Boxster owner I know. He wanted to know about the 2 wires and adding a cd changer. I now see that was not you.

Good luck with your install. Do not know of any issue with hooking up the 2660/CDC-3 changer. If Patrick also gets the changer by the time we do the install and there is an issue I will let you know.

Sorry for my confusion.

I just upgraded the CDR-220 with the HK traffic pro.

I have the CDC3 disk changer, no problems. You can find the manual for this on the hamman kardon website.

I had a problem with the subwoofer, which was easily corrected with splicing some wires, when it showed a difference on the subwoofer line-out (unsure whether this is CDR220 or my unit related). The HK seems to be correct.

[HV: Note: 10/1/04 -- this is CDR220 related, Jeff and Patrick report the same wire splice)]

Otherwise, works like a charm.

Henry

I am agonizing over buying the Traffic Pro for my Boxster S. I have the same 220 Radio with the Bose package, and 6 CD player in the trunk. Would you be kind enough to explain if the swap was difficult?

Does the cable plug merely unplug from the 220 radio, and then just pop on the Traffic Pro? I know you need to put the antenna somewhere, right?

Do you have to tap into the speed wire, etc?

I really appreciate your time and help with this.

PS

Does the display color match the other panels in the cockpit? Is the text black on an amber background? I have seen Traffic Pros have a yellow background with dark amber fonts as well.

Much Thanx

Mike

Hi Mike,

just go for it.

Both the CDR-220 and the HK unit are from the same vendor (Becker). They are essentially the same unit, pin-out wise, except for the satellite antenne input. Plug and play except for two issues:

1. Satellite Antenna

comes with the unit, fits in the center of the dash cover. Installs in about 5 minutes. (I cheated here - pull up your alarm and remote sensor (blinking light under center dash cover, and you can drop the cable straight down)

2. Reverse Signal

this is most likely not made available in your car. It is accessible underneath the driver's seat, or from the reverse signal (lamp) wire. Jeff made a good write-up on the driver's seat access: Reverse Signal hookup.

The unit comes with an extra pin insert that you'll need. This signal probably takes the most effort of the install.

The speed sensor signal should already be connected into your CDR-220 (it is what makes your GAL function work). [There have been issues with this signal/function in early ('97, '98 with CDR-210) and late ('03, '04 with MOST) cars.]

I do not have the Bose system, rather, I have a custom installed 8" woofer and amp. The amp, in my case, is hooked into the line-out (connector C1 on page HK Installation Guide essentially the same for the Bose hookup. The hk has better controls than the CDR-220.

[HV Note 10/1/04: See Patrick's comment below, the C1-6 to A-5 cut and splice is necessary for the amp to power up. I think everyone with an amp has to do this.]

As to the display, it is compatible with the stock colors, below in the pic you see the "night-time" display. It is customizable (amber on black, black on amber, daytime/nighttime automatic). Only negative is that the polarization is wrong - you cannot read the display with polarized sun glassess. (The unit above, the A/C controls "blackens" when I rotate my head 90 degrees, at which time the trafficpro is fully legible).

I've got the amp in the trunk, so for my install, I need to splice connector A Pin 5 to connector C Pin 6. On the CDR-220 and the Porsche Traffic Pro, Connector C Pin 6 is the Amp power on signal, on the HK, that connector is subwoofer out.

As Henry says, probably the hardest part is connecting the reverse wire. It will work fine without it as long as you don't ground it. My understanding is where it will make a difference is if you are in an area that there isn't any GPS coverage and you drive in reverse, the system will not know you are going reverse and think you are going forward. However, once you receive the GPS signal, it should correct for it.

Henry: You gave in and got it, huh?

Henry: You gave in and got it, huh?

:jump: You should be in sales, Patrick. You convinced both Jeff and myself to take the plunge. But I'm glad I did.

I had to make the same pin-splice to make my amp work. (I thought I had a defective CDR-220.)

Still have to put tape on it, my alarm still beeps when activating.
