New AV/Navigation System

Recommended Posts

After having the convenience of Nav on the Cayenne, I'm considering of upgrading the OEM stereo equipment on the 996 to an aftermarket system with GPS Nav. The system will include the following:

1. Kenwood DVD/CD/MP3 Monitor Receiver

Utilizing double-DIN dash

2. Kenwood DVD Navigation

Installed in the bonnet

3. CD changer

Installed in the bonnet

4. MB Quart 4-channel amp

Installed in the bonnet

5. MB Quart QSD 4" 2-way speakers

2 pairs for front dash mount and rear fill

6. MB Quart QSD 164 6.5" mid-bass

Door mount

7. Kenwood power subwoofer mounted under the seat

I'm looking for a clean sounding system, nothing obnoxious and loud. Suggestions?

Since I'm doing the installation myself, I have a few questions:

1. Will 6.5" fit in the factory door location w/o major modification or would 5.25" fit better?

2. What's the best way to run the wire from the bonnet to the passenger compartment?

3. I'm also installing a reverse sensor. How can I run a wire from the rear bumper to the interior space?

4. Do I need special tool to remove the head unit?

Thank you for any input! :)

Why not get the top rated Pioneer AVIC-N! system, less boxes and more options...and its reasonably priced...go to the avicn1.com website and have a look.

I have one in my C4S and will put one in my wifes CayenneS so the kids can watch DVD's on long drives.

Cheers

You may not need to run a wire from the rear bumper to get a signal that the reverse gear is engaged. Try to find the install instructions for the traffic pro. Under the drivers side seat there control box that has a connection with a reverse signal.

I'm going to get my camera and bring it to work tomorrow and take how to and where to pics. I don't think running wires to the bonnet will be the best thing for you to do. The only hole in the firewall is directly behind the battery. If you run the signal wires past the batt you will most likely get some interference(engine noise). Sub under the seat? I have a bunch of great ideas as I am finishing my 99 996 show car. By the way.. this is what I do for a living

The CD Changer goes through a firewall grommet that is not really behind the battery. Follow the cable laying over the trunk seal in this pic.

CD changer cables are no problem but rca cables are a different story. They will pick up signal interference. I've done countless installs on 996 and 986 where about 50% get some noise from the battery. If you don't have to mount the amp in the front its better not to .

Interesting maybe it's how you route the wires? there is a lip that you can actually run the wiring under that tray, but more likely than not you are running the signal wire rca's too close to the battery cables. This will always lead to that noise. I ALWAYS consciosly separate them so this doesn't occur- As noted previously I found that I had no problems when being mindful of this. Thanks Loren you are right where it comes through as always, I forgot.

Do you have pictures of what you ended up with?

I am looking to install either a PCM (if I could find a resonably priced one for my 996 or an aftermarket that looks as close to Factory as I can get.

I'm sure the wife wouldnt mind watching a movie while I drive, however, I want to make sure whatever I get does not affect the overall impact to my interior.

Has anyone installed a Double DIN stereo in a 996? The AVIC-N1/2 is a nice unit, but I don't like the screen dangling out there. I would rather install the Kenwood DDX7015.

Either that or I would like to just add a XMCommander XM radio transmitter through my CR-220 head-unit. I do have the CD changer, so I don't think I can use Becker's Aux. wire kit. That would force me to not use the CD changer and all I have is cassette in the head-unit.
