2000 Boxster S Rear Spoiler

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Need some help...

The rear spoiler on my 2000 S is not going up or down. I realized this when my spolier warning light came on today on the highway when I hit 75mph. It doesn't shut off until I turn the car off. I checked the fuse box and the fuse was blown. I replaced and tried to manually raise the spoiler, fuse blew. Must be a short somewhere or the motor is bad. I also checked the rear relays and swapped the extender and retractor. Didn't work. Anyone had this problem? Know how to fix?

How long has it been since you used the spoiler? Months? weeks? I've noticed if I don't "exercise" mine, it acts slow and will set the light, never blew a fuse. I changed my habits, take a short drive on the interstate every week, and havent had a light in months.

I drove the car Thursday and Friday last week and was still getting the light. Weird. I am going to try putting another new fuse in and then drive down the interstate. The fuse blows when I push the manual switch in the fuse box. Right now when I drive, the spoiler light comes on when I hit 75mph and doesn't shut off until I turn the car off. I probably drive the car at least once a week.

Ok, a little troubleshooting. When you replace the fuse and drive the car, and you go above 75 and the light comes on, is the spoiler up? If you look back can you see it? Does it go down when you slow down? You shouldn't have to ever use the manual switch if things are working correctly. If you drive the car, and go above 75 and the light comes on did it blow the fuse? Or does the fuse only blow with the use of the manual switch?

Anyone know if there's a way to oil/lubricate these things? I hadn't driven the boxster for about 4 months. The spoiler was working fine when I parked it, but the first time on the highway the other night the spoiler extended but not before the light came on. I stopped to check on it, and I had to manually retract it. The light came on again when I got back on the highway, but the spoiler extended and retracted this time.

This morning I didn't see any problems at all with it. I assume it just shook off a little rust or something, but in future is there something I should be greasing?

  • 2 weeks later...

Drove the car yesterday on the highway and went over 75 mph and the warning light didn't come on! Good news, Since I can't see the spoiler I am assuming it is going up and down. I think there is a short in the manual spoiler switch. So I just won't touch the switch from now on. Thanks.

I was reading through this forum string and was not able to find answers to a few specific questions I have below. I hope you can help. I have 2003 Boxter (manual tranny) and recently experienced the instrument cluster warning light about spoiler not operating as I was hitting spoiler up speeds. I am also not able to raise or lower the speed using the manual switch in the fuse box in the foot well. Here is what I have checked.

1. D7 (15amp) fuse is good. Replaced with another fuse and no action

2. Swapped relays 3 and 9 in rear trunk and still no action

3. Replaced relays 3 and 9 in rear trunk with new and still no action.

I will not be able to check the spoiler motor since I cannot get the spoiler cover off for removal of the assembly in the trunk. Are there any other checks that I should do? How do I get access to the motor if I cannot remove the cover (spoiler cannot be raised to loosen the cover)?

Your help and input is appreciated.
