good spark plugs

Recommended Posts

What are people's opinions on the Iridium spark plugs for the Boxster? Or what would you recommend instead? Platinum? Bosche Super 4?

I have just changed the spark plugs on my '97. Peter at Stevens Creek did not recommend the 4 tip (bosch). I used the 2 tip from Bosche ($3.99 at AutoZone). I could not find the Beru one.

You will need 2 tools from snap on and a torque wrench

1. S9706KA Sparl Plug Socket $26.79

2. Fxw4 extension (4 inch) $21.50

3. torque wrench ~$75 at orchard (Craftsman)

Toolpants and others have posted more info on the following post:

You spent that much money on a socket and ratchet to take out spark plugs.

Did you torque your sparkplugs, if so be careful doing that, it is not an exact science. The crush ring is something you need to feel and not torque. You have no idea how stable your threads are, so torquing your sparkplugs could cost you!!!

I am sorry but for $15.00 you could do the same thing, the only helper I have seen [bought] are the T handled allen wrenches [harbor freight.] also maybe a couple 3/8 allen sockets.

The extension either flexible or wobble would also help, but you can make do without it.

There is another thread here on the platinum +4. I do not know a Boxster owner with iridium. We have a local 996 turbo owner who tried them and he said the car ran bad. And for what it is worth, the owner of a Harley shop I know says they are junk.

The Bosch plugs used by the factory are the Super line. These are conventional nickel plated copper plugs.

I have used my trusty Craftsman spark plug socket, extension, and ratched tools. Did not need to buy special tools for the Box.

Hmm.... the Iridium plugs have even thinner tips than the Platinums. If the Platinum's tip can break-off.... hmm.... maybe I should just stick to the factory options.

TP, what is the exact Bosche part number you use for the heat rating 7 two-electrode plugs?

For the 2 side electrode plugs used on the 2.5. Bosch FR 7 LDC4 or Beru 14 FR 7 LDU. The 7 in the part numbers is the heat range. The early 1997s came with heat range 6 and Porsche went to 7 in April 1997. My January 1997 had 6 but when I replaced them Porsche sold me 7.

When my car was new it came with Bosch. When I replaced the plugs at 30,000 miles Porsche sold me Beru and I have had the Beru plugs in for 20,000 miles. Bosch and Beru look identical to me and I cannot tell any difference in performance between brands.
