Windows won't go up after removing ignition lock

Recommended Posts

Neither of my windows will roll up after removing the ignition lock barrel and rotating 180 degrees (switch would not return to position 0) - windows worked fine before (only other thing I did was disconnect battery). Prior to this I had the steering assy out to upgrade (had ignition switch problem) so the lock barrel has been out a few times in the past week or so and windows always worked fine till now.

Checked D1 fuse and it was fine. Is there any other fuse I need to check?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Bill

It's your battery disconect. There is a trick of holding the widow swithces down (with ignition on) for 15 seconds (somthing like that). Do a search for the exact nethod and all you woes will evaporate.

Is this what you mean:

When you disconnect the battery, the windows have to re-learn their upper and lower travel limits. This is done by "teaching" the windows: pressing and holding the window switches until the windows are completely up or down and then vice versa. It's in the owner's manual somewhere.

Before I made this post I pushed the switches the normal way you would and got no movement in either Up/Down direction - thought I could hear a little noise from them - so do I just need to hold them down longer? Since the windows are in the down position which direction should I go with first?

Thanks.

I don't think that the order in which you do the re-learn matters.

Start with the Up direction and hold it for five to ten seconds after it reaches the completely closed position, then repeat for the other direction.

Got home and gave it a shot with no success - dropped the top and bingo it worked..

Found reference to this procedure in the Bentley shop manual ( all 3 sentences) and it says that the top must be closed for this procedure - is this a typo or when they say closed don they mean in the stored position? Confusing.

Anyway everything is fine now - thanks to everyone for all the help.
