Boxster Key

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 1997 Boxster, and came to find out that the previous owner only had 1 key, in that key they did not have the control for the locks or trunk and have been locking and unlocking manually. I have located the remote and replaced it in the key, but can't get it to function. Can somebody tell me how to reprogram the key, and where I can get a replacement made reasonably.

Porsche has made it near impossible to get a replacement at a reasonable cost, and AFAIK actually impossible to get one reprogrammed at a reasonable cost.

I've had success in getting a duplicate key actually "cloned" by a good locksmith around my parts, but only for the lock/unlock manually functions and for starting the car. The remote functions were beyond his abilities at this time, but the "spare" key only cost me around $50, with me bringing the blank key blade. He cut the key and then cloned the "start" ability of the key (I'm guessing it clones the transponder code).

Don't be tempted to buy the keys that are being sold on eBay if they don't come with that little I.D. tag as you will not be able to have those programmed at all, even by the dealer.

Some, left with no other choice, have paid as much as $500 for a completely functioning (doors, start, remote functions) key at a dealer.

Do a search here and you'll find some threads on replacement keys, as well as some threads that explain a few different (and seemingly incomprehensible) methods for "reviving" a dead key. One is as simple as pulling out the battery from the inside of the key, installing it with reverse polarity for a few seconds, and then re-installing it properly.

Regards, Maurice.
