Remote operation - older Cab top?

Recommended Posts

I have a new (to me) 2000 C2 cab. I have ordered the Smart Top module to enable top operations while moving, but would very much like to be able to operate the top (and windows) remotely. My key has single button and operates only the security and door locks.

In the past, I have made extensive use of 3rd party remote door lock systems (key fob actuator) to operate door locks, windows, sun roofs, lights, etc. on Porsches and bimmers.

Does anyone have any experience using a unit like this to operate older 996 windows and cab tops?

This is standard on ROW models. As I understand it isn't an option in the US/Canada. I think it should work so long as you have a matched keyfob & receiver and your ECU is programmed to use it.

But I have to ask why. I have that feature but never use it. It's not very reliable either. I mean you have to point the keyfob at the inside mirror and wait until the top closes, windows close etc and all the time standing there like a dork with your thumb on the keyfob. IMHO it's a useless feature.

Scouser,

If it worked as you describe, then I agree it would not be worth the bother. My experience with after market systems has allowed me, in the past, to use a standard keychain remote (momentary push) to close BMW windows & sun roof, via the use of a timed relay module triggered by the remote. I had hoped someone might have attempted the same thing, using the timed signal from the module to raise/lower the top ... after a single momentary push on the keychain remote. My limited experience would suggest this might could happen if the module closed the same connection that the Porsche top switch does, simply jumping around the switch.
