Front suspension clunk

Recommended Posts

My 99 C2 Cab has had an intermittent clunk in the right front suspension since I got it (3 years). Usually happens when I am backing out of my driveway and one wheel drops over the curb before the other.

I've been reading up on the problem here and finally decided to replace the strut top bearing over the winter. While the strut was out I also checked the sway bar link, tie rod and lower ball joint. All seemed tight.

When I first drove the car I thought I'd fixed it but the noise came back when I was doing a tight U-turn. I'm not a happy camper. cursing.gif

Back to the garage today and see if I can find the source.

Any thoughts on how I might proceed with chasing this issue would be appreciated.

Cheers

Thanks Loren. I had the front end off the ground this AM and went through everything.

Checked all the mounting points including prying them a bit with a very large screw driver.

I checked the tightness of the upper strut mounts and they are OK. Also checked the sway bar mounts and they seem solid.

I did have a recent problem with the sway bar mounts on my wife's Benz. The bushings seemed ok but they would groan every time you went over a bump.

I may take a second look at the mounts on the Porsche.

This has got me stumped and I don't necessarily want to start chasing it with new parts.

Thanks again for all of your excellent work on this site.
