smoke when starting

I am just wondering why there are times when i start my 986 smokes come out...is this common to 986 or i may need to replace the valve seals...

Its common. Should dissipate right after start-up. Is it white smoke? How long does it smoke? At every startup?

A little condensation burn off from water build up is normal for any car on startup.

Also a littlte blue smoke on startup is normal, common for flat 6 engines.

Any smoke after start up and the car is warm is not normal.

I noticed a pattern with mine. If I start the car and move it a few feet, then wash it and start it again to move it back in the garage, it will very reliably smoke pretty bad the next time I start it. Otherwise it doesn't seem to smoke and doesn't use oil between changes.

Dale_K, I had the exact thing as you describe in your pattern happen to me today in my 2006 987S. First time I have ever noticed any smoke on start up. I also was washing my car and it was after I was finished and was moving it back into the garage that I had a large puff of blue smoke when I started it. Lasted about 2 seconds then went away. Whats with that? Does it have something to do with washing the car?
