Differential removal

Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of removing my differential from my gearbox, but I'm stuck at the first step, I can't for the life of me work out how to remove the center shafts that attach the cv joints to the diff. I can't find the center bolt which the book says to remove first.

Can someone please shed some light on this for me?

If you cant find center bolts in the flange(s) on both or one side of the gearbox, than they pull simply out. In that case they are hold by a steel snap ring lock system inside the diff. Hope it helps.

Ok that makes sense, since the gearbox their working on in wayne's book is from the S model.

Im guessing the only way im going to be able to get to the diff in order to do that is to remove the gear shafts and get to it from the top, because your not able to remove the side diff cover until the half shafts are removed.

removing differential does not require you to take out the center bolt.

after separating the drive shaft from the differential and also separating

the left side drive shaft from transmission, you will be able to see the center

bolts, again you don't have to remove the center at all to remove the differential

take a look at the pix below

be prepared to have a pan under the differential to capture the diff. fluid

note that you have to take the left side first because its is attached to the diff. as you know

for the left side have a pan handy to capture transmission fluid.

to take the left shaft out , all you have to do is remove the 3 bolts behind the flange and pull gently.

I don't know which transmission you have but I recall reading something in the shop manual about draining the diff before pulling the left side axle on Tip models because otherwise the Tip fluid will become contaminated by the diff gear oil.

I finally removed it a few days ago, been a bit busy. It's only a base model boxster and the differential center shafts do not have center bolts, simply had to pull them out as their held In with spring clips, thanks though guys.

Also for a bit of comic relief ( or to cringe over ) ill post the photos of what I found once the diff was removed, finally found the knock.
