Dashboard Airbag removal

1. Remove ignition key.

2. Disconnect the battery and cover terminal or battery. (these are essential to make sure the airbag does trigger and go off. Handle the airbag like it is a bomb - it can still go off if dropped or jarred.)

3. Remove the air guide at the bottom right of dash.

4. Undo the airbag unit from below and remove it rearward to the passenger's seat.

5. Disconnect the electrical plug connection.

6. Pullout the hinge pin on the airbag unit and remove the panel.

When installing the airbag the two fastening screws are 15 ftlb.

Install is the reverse sequence.

The service manual does not mention removing the glovebox and I can not recall if you can get to the underdash screws (once the air guide is removed).

The airbag is over the glovebox so the only issue would be access to the two screws from under the dash.

just some additional information to let people know how to remove the airbag in the event someone else has to do the same. the removal is pretty straight forward once you know how. i have an 03 model year that has a glove box. once you disconnect the battery, the glove box needs to come out. remove a couple of screws around the glove box surround and two additional screws towards the back of the glove box. upon removing the glove box, carefully disconnect the connection to the glove box light. once the glove box is out look undeneath the dash and you will see two, blue colored, bolts that secure the airbag aluminum frame to the dash metal substructure. remove the two, 13 mm, bolts and carefully pull the entire airbag assembply out of the dash and disconnect the electrical connection. remove the leather cover by simply pulling out a small steel rod that secures the cover to the airbage frame. do not need to remove the air duct as stated.
