Another Oil Leak Thread

Hello List,

Just acquired another 996. 02 996 C2 Tip, 52K miles with maint records only back to 07 with second owner. I am now the third. Along with the remains of the mouse nest on top of the transmission, there is evidence of some oil weeping on the right side of the motor. After some searching, I found what appears to be the source. (see pic) It appears to be a breather line or unclamped hose just beyond and slightly below the airbox, near the serpentine belt, on the right side. Should this be attached somewhere?

Can you trace that hose back to see if it's coming from your power steering pump?

It is from a location below the power steering pump. The location is below and just right of the AC compressor. It appears to be a breather valve of some sort. I've been looking at the engine photos and schematics and cant find one that describes the specific location. I'll keep looking.

Still no luck identifying this open valve/line. Maybe hard to see in the photo, but it is centered side to side in the frame, just below the middle vertically. Right next to the polyrib belt. Easy to see in expanded view.

Really hard to tell from that pic

But it looks like it is the AOS breather/vent on top of the 4-6 head.

It is normal for that to weep a little, but not severely. I would just clean it up as best you can and monitor. That is a pain to get at with the engine installed and there are two rubber orings inside of the connector which could also be the source of a leak.

Any resolution to this? I have the same leak and am trying to decide if it's worth it to replace with a new 99610714751. It seems like it's really hard to get in there. Anyone know how much you have to remove to get at it? It seems like just the airbox is not enough, but I don't see any advantage to removing the throttle and intake plenums as if I was trying to get at the AOS.

There is a good AOS replacement DIY located here:

The AOS itself can crack, or the hoses can come loose or split or break causing an oil or coolant leak in that area.

It is pretty much impossible to replace the AOS without removing the intake plenum from the top or removing the engine.

Once you go to those lengths to access it, you might as well replace it, and the hoses, since they are relatively inexpensive compared with the task of just getting to it.

Don't drop anything into the intake (put tape over the intake holes).

Replace the hose clamps with high grade stainless worm style clamps.

Consider paying a shop to do the work if it looks too complicated.
