My 2000 C4 is randomly losing audio. Having now bought a new cd player, thinking the old cd player was faulty but as is now re-occuring with the newly installed unit, guessing wiring / car problem. The only way to get audio back is to power the cd player off or turn the car off. I do get a crackling in sound sometimes before it goes off and other times no warning - the audio just disappears.

Anyone else had this problem? Is there a common fix ?

This is a common problem with these cars - I've been told it's the amp and/or some issue with the MOST bus, but that's about it. On my 2004 C2 this happens one a year or so - you need to turn the car off for a few minutes and then restart. I just live with it.

BTW , Christopher, your car doesn't have the MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) bus......which is a fiber optic system integrating radio/nav, external cd, external amplifier and telephone. The MOST bus has been a fairly reliable system but very difficult to work around when upgrading audio systems. I would consider myself fortunate not to have the MOST bus system to have to work around.

If you have an OEM external amplifier, it is mounted in the front trunk on the "firewall" between the spare tire and the battery.

One other place in the audio system that has caused problems with the audio system is the detachable faceplate. If any of the electricle contacts have any dirt or corrosion on them, the audio system might be affected.

Thanks for responses.

Have taken look in the car and have a OEM amp which i guess is causing the problem. So I have ordered a better new 6 channel amp to replace it but just wondering whether I can use the standard amp wiring or does it need replacing too ??

Anyone know any tutorials for replacing / upgrading audio / amp in 996 C4 as cant find any on web? (Even diagram explaining what each colour wire entering the oem amp is would help)

Cheers
