I installed a Kenwood DNX6990HD and need your help adding the backup c

Recommended Posts

My car is a '99 Coupe.

I've read a few posts, this being the best:

http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/26098-how-to-run-backup-camera-wiring/?hl=backup+camera

Correct me if I'm wrong.

From the camera in the rear there is a yellow RCA that has to get back to the head unit to plug in to the video in for the camera and also a positive and ground that both connect to the drivers side tail light reverse light connection.

From the head unit there is one wire 12 volt trigger that must connect to a reverse trigger to automatically switch the screen when I put the car into reverse. Where does this wire connect, somewhere in the interior or back at the tail light?

I am not sure how to get the yellow RCA from the engine compartment through the grommet mentioned in the link I posted above and then into the interior compartment.

If any of you have done this please reply to this post with any tips that may help.

Thanks

RS

When I buy cameras they either have an extra wire in with the RCA for the rear or I add an extra wire to the rear. Most trigger off 12V, so connect to the reversing light in the back. I am sure there are places up front to tap the reverse line as well, but its not hard to patch back in the rear. This also powers the camera, so if you want to be able to run the camera via the deck when NOT in reverse, then run two wires to the back, one for reverse trigger and the other for power to camera.

I wrap all cables and joints in tesa tape (search ebay), its the black fabric tape that has some sort of glue on one side and is commonly used in all german cars to wrap the wiring, so once you are done, no one will spot that the wiring isn't factory.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi there RS,

This is the exact link that I used to assist in my reverse camera installation.

Like you, I tapped into the tail light for earth and power for the camera when the reverse light was illuminated.

I then taped the RCA extension supplied with the camera to a straightened coat hanger and fed it through the grommet on the RH side. With the rear trim and sound proofing removed, my better half was in the car and was able to locate it and then it is a matter of carefully pulling the wire through.

As far as routing the wire, I carefully tucked it along the carpet line and then underneath the centre console. This was achieved by carefully prying the edge and feeding both the RCA cable and the power cable from the head unit. RCA towards the deck and head unit switch/power wire towards the back.

Regarding the power/switch wire from the head unit, this was tapped into the wire described in the link you have specified (underneath the bracket where the ECU resides). Just double check with a multi meter to ensure you have the exact one. From memory, mine was black with a purple/pink tracer. You will be able to pinpoint it as it will be the same colour combination as your tail light wire.

Good luck!

Peter

Thanks, mission accomplished. It works like a charm. The Kenwood DNX6990HD I added is amazing, HD FM Radio, iPod, Bluetooth, Sirius XM, Navigation By Garmin with traffic, Backup Camera, DVD Player...hacked to play while the car is moving and added a USB Hub and USB 32 Gig flash dive loaded with movies for the kids.

I updated amps, sub and all speakers last year. This is by far an amazing system with an audio sound that is over the top.

Absolutely fantastic, make sure you buy the Kenwood iPod cable. The iPod will not work without the specific Kenwood cable. I have a Sirius tuner, PM me if your interested in how to negotiate pricing with Sirius. I got everything that they offer for $26 for 5 months.

Bluetooth works well. Ground the brake wire and DVD's play while your moving as we'll as the ability to add a destination to the Nav while the car is moving. The HD radio is crystal clear with stations that send the album cover of the song you're listening to on the screen. I loaded custom POI's from POI Factory to alert me of red light and speed cameras nation wide with updates every Wednesday.

All in all, the sound quality with 5 amp pre-outs is excellent. My 911 has all new speakers, a 300w amp for the front and rear and a 400w amp for the 8" Sub. I like my music and this head unit sounds fantastic. There are lot of really nice features in the Nav setup to monitor your driving, keep track of fuel usage, green driving etc.
