Shifter Removal Question

I'm trying to remove the stock shifter on my 996 in order to install a Carbon Fiber Shifter. The stock shifter doesn't have the retaining bolt. I can't pull the shifter off. I've exerted a massive amount of force trying to pull it straight off. The black plastic sleeve that is below the graphite grey leather nor the knob will budge a millimeter. Any suggestions?

If you are sure there is no set screw. The standard shift knob does not have a set screw.

Twist the shift knob hard back and forth so that the plastic sleeve expands a bit. Then pull. Then pull harder.

I once saw a mechanic put one foot on each seat as he was standing in the car. He did not want to get hit in the face when the shift knob let go.
