It look at you are on to something although the bypass valve could be a little more glamorous. In all seriousness, it appears the main difference is the bypass pipe added between the inlet and outlet portion of the muffler. True?

There is more to it besides just the bypass. The dimensions on the bypass pipes have to be right in order to make the correct backpressure, plus I know the old PSE muflers are made in another way inside the mufler.

This type of bypass is an incredibly common mod for the C5 Corvettes because their mufflers have a similar design where the inlet and outlet are on the same side. A company sells the pre-cut crossover pipes for $75 and people take it to muffler shops to have it installed.

I would say definitely for the 3.4L you could measure the pipe of the old style PSE and have a muffler shop custom fit the same design for little money. Considering how you could pick up OEM take off's for real cheap, you can feel confident that if the experiment doesn't work out you can always go back to stock.

If it does work, you'll save something like $1300 over buying a PSE and paying shipping, so it has a good risk/reward ratio.

Could be a good vendor opportunity.

Don't think its possible to convert. Take a look at the "Mufflers Exposed" page on the fabspeed website, which shows cut open 996 stock mufflers.

I have a set of almost new 996 stock mufflers for sale cheap if you're interested. (If I'm not allowed to say that here, please forgive me and delete!).

dig up this thead couple months after its being discussed..

don't you guys think the fabspeed muffler bypass can be easily done by any muffler shop for 1/3 of the price where fabspeed is selling?

The German ebay guy makes them for 996/986. He buys used mufflers then welds on the bypass pipes. A UK 996 guy on the Posche Club GB site bought the 996 version and gave it a good review. A UK Boxster owner has given the 986 version a good review. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7325

Or you can go to Home Depot and get some galvanized plumbing fittings and make your own. The valve with the green handle is optional.

I have the PSE on my 06 997S, and I truly do like the button that makes it sportier sounding on demand, but why no Hp Gain. I have spokem with the few tuners such as EVO, favspeed and AWE, and they also have awsome atermarket kits incorpoorating their mufler. Has anyone herd of an header cat sytem to work in tandem with the PSE? or is the PSE a nover $2400 part that i should sell on ebay. I am a HP geek and want to see what is out there. Plus my car has only 3oo miles so i a just putting a shopping cart together to see what i wan to do in the spring. Thanks for any feed back.

Also I bought the car off the lot and now want to get full leather installed. Any help in doing that woudl be interesting. I usally keep the cars for 4 years so for me its woth the extra bucks. It all about making it my perfect car until someone else finds it.
