Codes P0410 and P1141 revisited

I don't wish to open this topic for general information again. There is enough information on line about these codes to fill a large book. Over the past 3 years I have attempted to find the cause of these codes in my 2001 996 C2. The car was looked at and presumably repaired at 2 independents as well as a Porsche dealership. All tubing, the single check valve and the vacuum switch had been replaced with the guidance of numerous smoke tests. Another independent (Porsche, Audi and Benz) FINALLY identified a VERY small hairline crack at the base of the reservoir.

The pros on line usually leave this possibility at the end of the list. For minimal additional expense the entire vacuum system from the black/white valve on the intake manifold to the check valve should be replaced on the first go by someone reputable. Unfortunately it may take some time and money to find that reputable shop.

Thought I would add my experience with my 2000 Boxster. Had the same problem with recurring codes. The system passed a smoke test but using a hand vacuum pump, the secondary air system would not hold a vacuum. I replaced the check valve, all the tubing and the Y fittings and still wouldn't hold vacuum. Finally isolated it to the vacuum resevoir. It would not hold vacuum when isolated from the system. Not the easiest thing to replace on a Boxster. Onmy one screw holds it on but I had to pull the alternator to get to the screw. Once the resevoir was off, it looked fine. However, with alttle pressure in it and holding it under water, there was a hairline crack where the base attaches to the sides. Replaced the resevoir and no codes in the last 2000 miles. ;-)
