1999 C4 Rally Build - Info desired

Recommended Posts

We are undertaking a new build in a couple months. We are taking a 1999 996 C4 and converting it into a rally car. Not our first Porsche build, but the newest we are undertaking.

I am looking for complete wiring diagrams for the car and any info available for engine related electronics.

A few basic questions as I am very new to this generation of car:

  1. I imagine the ECU is locked down, is there any chance it can be tuned?
  2. Transmission controller built into the ECU? (automatic transmission... yes I know, who would race an automatic... but we have an idea? or we yard it out and go to a Sequential).
  3. Odd proprietary electronic equipment that will make my life interesting?

We are likely to remove all of the stock wiring and ECU(s) and go with a full MoTeC system (allot of experience with MoTeC, so its a 95% chance thats what we will do).

I would like to find the diagrams for free, as most of the car will be stripped to the bare minimum and I dont need info on how to replace an interior widget/owners manual. I am looking for the raw diagram so that I can see what I absolutly need.

Any info, thoughts, re-directs or tips would be greatly appreciated. In turn I can keep you updated on the build (if interested).

Regards,

Bryan

Welcome to RennTech.:welcomeani:

Probably a good place to start is looking at the Bentley manuals for the car, which while not as extensive as the factory service manuals that are no longer available, it will still give you a good idea of the systems layout. And as Porsche tends to be brutal concerning their intellectual property rights, such as wiring diagrams, you will not likely find what you want for free.  This forum also does not participate in or encourage the violation of any intellectual property rights, as was mentioned in the rules you agreed to when joining.

The Porsche DME is somewhat limited for tuning purposes, but there are some aftermarket re-flashes available that may add very modest output improvements when used along with a significant investment in mechanical engine modifications. The Tiptronic transmission has its own controller that works in conjunction with the DME.

I would also suggest you do a search and read up on known potential weak points in the M96 engine, such as the IMS bearing and RMS.  These can easily be corrected, but need to be addressed prior to running the car in competition.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Will definitely pass the info regarding the engine onto our guys.

I feared as much in regards to the Porsche intellectual property gambit. Makes my life much harder. I will look into the Bentley manuals, hopefully they have what we need.
