Hi,

I m the proud owner of  a 996 c4 tiptronic which i purchased 2 months ago. The ims and rms leaked so i decided to change them. There is very good diy information on the net and here inthe forum and i would like to thank all those guys.

My question is about the torque converter. I pinned it when putting transmisson out and in. The pin fitted perfectly fitted to the end of it. When reputting back together i putted the pin out by error an turned the flywheel. Finally the torque converter stopped turning when turning flywheel. So i decided to turn back in position by turning the cardan before transmission. I also put gears in parking, neutral and drive. Finally managed to realign torque converter and disc and put the 6 bolts back in. I just wondered because the locking pin didnt fit 100 % to the like before. But it fitted nearly to the end. Could the torque converter not be in good position ?

Thanks in advance for your help !!!

Welcome to RennTech :welcomeani:

When the converter is properly inserted into the front pump housing, it engages muplitple shafts and should turn easily and smoothly, and the pin should insert easily as well.  When the pin did not fit properly, it was an indication that the torque convert had not been properly engaged with what it should be.  Because the system internals operate on hydraulic pressure, turning the out put shaft or shifting gears really does not do anything, so being able to realign the converter is more a matter of coincidence than correcting the problem.

If the car were in my shop, I would pull the trans back out, and make sure the converter is properly aligned.  If you start one of these cars with the converter out of alignment, you are going to do some serious damage to a very expensive converter and transmission.  There is only one way the converter is correctly installed, but may ways that leave it on the edge of creating a major nightmare.
