I have a '01 996 coupe with 15k miles. Its idle has been a little irregular since new. Dealer told me early on that it is normal for a boxer engine. It is getting its 15k mile service and I got a loaner Boxster '03. That idle rpm is rock solid on the boxster. Its a boxer engine, what gives?

There are a few things that can cause this. One is a carbon buildup inside the air intake butterfly - I use a bottle Chevron's Pro Guard Fuel Injector Cleaner (Techron) about every two to three months to clean that stuff out. A second possibility is dirty contacts on the throttle positioning sensor (egas). Those are the most common -- other than a loose vacuum hose ;)
