PSM and ABS Warning Light on after Alignment

Recommended Posts

Greetings folks,

I just picked up my car from a local alignment shop and tech notified me that the PSM and ABS warning lights came on when he test drove the car. He doesn't have the equipment to diagnose the problem and asked me to have Porsche take a look at it.

Does anyone know how an alignment could cause this issues?

I'll bring the car into Manhattan Motor Cars on Monday, but I'd like to have some clue.

Thank you,

Robert

Did the shop check your steering angle sensor actual value. It must be checked after a suspension alignment even where no changes were made to the wheel alignment values. All C4's and cars with PSM REQUIRE this according to Porsche.

From the service manual:

Warning!

Danger of injury and damage to property due to malfunctions in the PSM control range if the steering angle sensor is not calibrated or is calibralted incorrectly!

• Calibrate steering angle sensor with wheels in straightahead position with the Porsche System Tester 2!

• The steering angle sensor actual value must be checked after a suspension alignment where no changes were

made to the wheel alignment values!

You can also check the brake fluid level and the battery condition - both have been know to cause this. If not one of those, you will need to find a shop or dealer that has a PST2 or PIWIS tester to read the codes. The code(s) should point to the problem.

Thanks Loren. I am bringing the car into the Porsche dealership on Monday... I'll post back.

Only 2 posts over here Rob? Quite the opposite over at Rennlist :)

I've had zero technical issues with my Porsches, (knocks on wood)... :P

I'm going to hold onto the 2004 for the long haul, so my guess is that I'll be posted here more as the car gets older...

I'm seriously considering leasing a Cayman S, I'm going to look at the car next week... looks like a car that would be fun to toss around the track.

Rob - so what was the issue? taking my car in for tires at a local place this weekend, may get an alignment as well...

There is a setting that has to be changed via a Porsche configuration tool. I think it was related to the offset from steering column sensor.

Rob,

I took a Cayman S out for a test drive and I agree. It would make a fun track car.

Yeah! I've been tossing around the idea of waiting for a used one so I can buy it and mod it to death!!

As for the alignment, I'm going to look for an indy shop that has the PST2. Because the C4S needs all for wheels aligned it's about $500-$600 to get it aligned at the dealer... that's crazy.
