Oil leaking from spark plugs

I'm getting some oil leaking from the spark plug holes. I know there are sleeves with O'Rings which must be replaces and I know the valve covers should never be taken off. So my questions are:

Is this a DIY job?

Are there any write-ups

I changed my tubes last night. I had one the cracked and I cant account for a piece of plastic 1/8 of a inch around. Besides changing the oil what else should I do. Should I be worried that the plastic could be in the motor?
