  1. R. Both the factory service manual and Bentley's call for a tightening torque of 7 ft-lbs. It does seem "finger tight", but...... BTW, both manuals call out 7 ft-lbs for the tightening torque of the nuts and bolts that hold the engine access panel as well. Bill
  2. Wayne, For disassmbling your instrument cluster, check out this link: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...opic=35&hl= RennTech member brian2034 sells newly manufactured stalks (less the caps) that are nearly indistinguishable from the originals. I purchased a stalk earlier this year and it fits and works perfectly. brian2034 may have a few left and can probably help with the installation. Bill
  3. Wayne, Is the "new" instrument cluster actually unused new or an instrument cluster sourced from an internet auction site? I only ask because I'd be wary of purchasing one off an auction site from anyone other than a recognized breaking yard. The problem is: why is this instrument cluster for sale? Did the seller decide that he really didn't need an instrument cluster in his car anymore? Or, was the instrument cluster removed for cause and is for sale to help defray the cost of the replacement? My feeling is that a used instrument cluster from a reputable breaking yard would be a safer bet. Absent visable damage, that instrument cluster was probably working properly before the accident that brought the car to the breaking yard.....IMHO. If worse comes to worse with the new instrument cluster - after following Loren's advice - you can cannibalize the needed part(s) from the new instrument cluster for use in the old (properly functioning) instrument cluster. Bill
  4. PM, The latch on the oddments tray in my car is secure enough to hold the lid firmly closed. When I close the lid, if I push hard enough, I can hear the latch close and see the push button pop up about 1 mm to a flush position with the center console. Bill
  5. Tom, Here is a photograph of the instrument cluster plug kit. I ordered it from my dealer's parts department. The dealer didn't have it in stock and had to order the kit from the PCNA parts warehouse in Atlanta. If you can't get your dealer to cooperate, try board sponsor Sunset Porsche. And, you'll get a better than MSRP deal. The Porsche Electrical Connector Repair Kit that I saw had, as far as I could tell, every type of electrical connector in the car. There are actually two different Repair Kits - one for sports cars and one for Cayennes - and they have to be updated periodically as the electrical details change from year to year. If the technician at your dealer is stonewalling....well, I don't know what to suggest. Again you might try the folks at Sunset mentioning CARTOOL – Nr 96 0 000. Bill
  6. BROKEN PLUG HARDWARE. For those MY01 – MY04 DIY’ers who have broken the lock on one or more of the instrument cluster plugs or who are afraid they might, here’s the part number you need : PNA 721.04.300.202. This part number gets you a package with the three colored (blue, green, gray) covers/locks and all three black plugs. They only come as a set of three and cost $27.00 (dealer). The blue, white and black covers/locks and plugs are available for MY97 – MY00 Boxsters too. Have your Porsche technician (not parts guy) check his “Porsche Electrical Connector Repair Kit” for the replacement parts or at least a part number for the three plug package. The entire repair kit is known as CARTOOL – Nr 96 0 000 or PNA 721 043 600. It is full of connectors the parts guy would like to sell you the entire wiring harness for. Bill
  7. PM I have a MY02 Targa that has the same latching problem....although, so far, I only have to try twice to get the lid to close and stay latched. Does the alarm system sense the lid open or closed when you lock the car? I'll be interested to learn of the fix. I think the TSB information Loren provided is for the hinge end of the lid which was a worse problem when replacement of the entire center console was the only solution for a broken hinge. Bill
  8. Demiano, Look at these links: http://www.whiteson.org/boxster/mods/obc/OBC.pdf and http://www.whiteson.org/boxster/mods/obc/obc.stalk.pdf Buena suerte, Bill
  9. Mark, Check out this series of videos - 00 to 14 - on rebuilding a M96 engine: www.986fix.com Bill
  10. If you don't have the On Board Computer (OBC) and/or cruise control, now is a good time to add them. They are easily done and there are DIY threads and plenty of help from those who have done the "hacks" here on the board. Bill
  11. iback, Here's a link to the U.S. statute concerning emission control warranties: http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt It may be a start for your search for Canadian law. Bill
  12. Mike, The link on your page to the owner's manual shows a "fatal error". The link to Becker is OK. I agree wholeheartedly that the Porsche owner's manual is a required read. Even in hard copy, they aren't that expensive and will solve a lot of "problems". Bill
  13. ok, I have the same issue with my cup holder. Try pushing to the left of the 'push to open" icon....about half way across to the pivot point. Push with a short rapid motion. On about the second or third push, my cup holder opens. I take the difficulty in opening the cup holder a sign that I shouldn't have open containers in the car. Bill
  14. Here's an older post from another forum. It is about six years old so the prices may not reflect the current price structure; but the basic information is still valid. http://www.ppbb.com/scgi-bin/boards/986/mu....pl?read=761531 The second from the last paragraph has very important to consider if you are contemplating purchasing a key from an auction site. Bill
  15. jr, "That's what happens when you don't keep a pair of reading glasses in the garage." I feel your pain. Bill
  16. jr, The following is from the MY03 Owner's Manual: "Clearing the stored seat position 1. Switch the ignition on with the desired vehicle key. 2. Simultaneously press and hold the "key" button and person button 2 for at least 5 seconds." I don't know what year your car is, so using button one, as indicated in your last post, may be correct in your case. As far as cleaning goes, I would look carefully to see if there is an impediment to the switch making proper contact, then gently blow around the switch with something like a computer keyboard cleaner aerosol and finally, use an electrical contact cleaner. If that doesn't work, possibly hook up a PST2 to your car. You may be able to determine the problem....the PST2 / PIWIS experts on the board are more knowledgeable in that regard. Finally, if you have to replace the memory switch assembly, Sunset is about the most reasonable with their pricing. Bill
  17. jr, Two last thoughts..... Erase the settings for the buttons; set button one first and see if the settings are kept in memory. If that works, then the button works. Next, set button two and see if it retains it's memory. If it does, check button one again. If button two does not retain it's memory..........? There have been reports of unintended hood (boot) lid unlockings while driving. Most of the occurances were caused by dirt particles under the release button. You might try gently cleaning under button one to make sure there isn't something keeping the switch from making contact. Memory Switch / 996.613.103.01 (through MY01) / MSRP $108.51 Memory Switch / 996.613.103.02 (MY02 and later) / MSPR $108.51 Bill
  18. jr, At the risk of sounding pedantic, "enable" may not impart the correct function for the red and yellow plastic collars at the base of your keys. The collars are there to identify which key is which when two different people are driving the same car.....obviously with different seat and mirror adjustments. In the PET Catalog they are listed as: Identification Ring, Key - 996.637.344.00 (Blue and Green) Identification Ring, Key - 996.637.344.01 (Red and Yellow) I only point this out because of the keys checkered history for operating correctly. I have memory seats and have had some "bugs" in the programming sequence as well. But the system is very fussy about proper sequence while doing the programming. Also, don't forget, you have to use one key (red?) for program seat one and the other key (yelow?) for program seat two. It's spelled out pretty well in the owner's manual. If you don't have one, you can download one here at RennTech. Bill
  19. This is the note from the MY03 Carrera Owner's Manual (page 80): "With a warmed-up engine and at a speed of 5000 rpm, the engine oil pressure should be approx. 3.5 bar." I would imagine the above note would apply to your engine (MY99/3.4 litre vs. MY03/3.6 litre) as well. Bill
  20. -B- Nice installation. Tell me, how did you get rid of the Pioneer logo and copyright information on the start-up splash page? I've got an AVIC-Z3 in my MY02 Targa. I up loaded a Porsche logo similar to yours but it just serves as a background to the Pioneer logo. If you cleared the Pioneer logo from the unit, please share the steps you took.....preferably in terms an analog man can understand. Thanks, Bill
  21. On the box: "Pressure Sensor - Engine Oil"; Part No. 996.606.203.01; MSRP : $56.31. In the PET catalog: "Oil Pressure Switch"; Part No. 996.606.203.00 There are, as you know, two terminals on the oil pressure sensor/switch. The larger of the two sends a pressure signal to the oil pressure gauge in the instrument cluster, i.e., 0-5 bar. the smaller of the two terminals sends a signal to the low oil pressure idiot light just below the instrument cluster. It is the idiot light that the DME monitors and records to memory. The oil pressure gauge is secondary. Either part of the oil pressure sensor/switch can fail internally - more likely the oil presure gauge portion. The idiot light portion just determines whether you have oil pressure or not. If you have the proper amount of oil in the engine, without an illuminated low oil pressure idiot light, when the oil pressure gauge is fluctuating or dropping to zero, you are to "Have the fault remedied at an authorized Porsche dealer." If, however, you ever have an illuminated low oil pressure idiot light, you are to: "Immediately stop in a suitable place. Switch off the engine. Check oil level. If necessary, add engine oil. Caution! Risk of engine damage. If the warning light comes on even though oil level is correct: Do not continue driving. Have the fault remedied at the nearest authorized Porsche dealer. Bill
  22. Looking at nav-tv web site, it appears to me that the various interfaces offered are for 997/987 cars. The web site doesn't address 996's/986's with the MOST bus. Bill
