Most common fails on electric pumps.... In no particular order. (Based on general cars not just porsche... ) Fuel Pump - Basically they wear out. Fuel Pump relay - Same,, sometimes they can get sticky from age and with enough attempts they will work but its a warning. Check valve in Fuel pump. - Still have to replace the pump to fix problem, but I have gotten them to work by removing the pump and soaking the internals down with seafoam ,, they varnish up with age and seafoam will desolve it.. Its a fussy job ,, good for a winter weekend and a good beer.. If you have a scanner hooked up (Durametric or PST ) You might catch a code if you dont keep trying just try once and stop.. Weak sensor like CPS/TPS/IAT etc.. can cause this symptom.. If Equipped,, It can also be the e-throttle needs to re-sync,, just start cold, turn the ignition on and let sit for a few minutes, you should here the throttle cycle.. If its a mechanical version the TPS can cause a slow start .. Cheers!

dwtaylorpdx replied to hi8ha's topic in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)The K&N will not filter properly without oil, if oiled PROPERLY exactly according to the K&N instructions it won't likely hurt the MAF, most folks don't follow the instructions and Chaos ensues.. I've run them hundreds of thousands of miles and never found any issues, but I'm really anal about taking care of oiled filters.. I prefer foam to the cloth because the foam stops water when oiled, and most of my vehicles see offroad use...
Another tip: The reason for the barrel crimp connectors is to give a mechanical connection that doesn't fail if a wire gets overheated, on these low load circuits,, its not a deal breaker.. If you solder a pair of wires together, without the barrel, male sure to not over penetrate the solder, if it flows in side the wires insulation it can become a brittle joint, it also takes away the wires ability to flex. So vibration can fatigue it quicker.
Never change gauge of wire in a circuit, it can heat at the junction where the resistance changes due to the size difference, if I was wanting to move the switch I'd use the same gauge ,, a barrel connector, crimp then solder lightly only in the hole in the center of the connector, you don't want solder to flow in to the wire. Most of the circuits in the wiring diagram are low current and trigger a relay.. May be exceptions. But that's what it looks like. if its a heavy circuit like the AC clutch, or a circuit on the load side of the relay I would put in a new wire..

I ran the Continentals on my BMW xi and it was like driving on pavement.. Shouldn't need chains unless your screwed up by unexpected weather. Old trick,, carry a hank of teh high density nylon rope ,, you can tie loops around the tire and wheel if you have the clearance from the caliper, don't last long but to get over a hill or rescue yourself from a bad choice.. 🙂
They really really don't like being dropped,, had a similar experience with Mustang MAF sensors,, 4 to get a good one.. I noticed the counter guys would throw anything that a customer didn't buy into a shopping cart from about 20 feet away.. Hmmmm. Changes stores and no more issues..
Been a while, but you might bench test the throttle position sensor, they wear and can get weak spots that the DME doesnt like.
