  1. From what I have gleaned reading the TSB's and my own expereince with my PCM2.1 , the PCM 2.1 uses the MOST fibre optic system to communicate with the main electrical system on the vehicle. If your cayenne is pre MOST system (ie not fibre optic) then i dont think it will work, so you would need to fit the PCM 2 (CD based) unit that was originally fitted to similar cars of your model year. There is hope for Porsche owners with the Cd based units as i beleive that navteq and teleatlas are continuing to support these systems with map updates. there is a software hack that allows the porsche navi to use nav disks intended for GM vehicles , so this may help. The PCM 2.1 device needs both the external DVD reader for the navigation disk as well as the PCM main unit in the dash. The PCM unit and the DVD must also be from the same generation , since mixing old and newer versions causes a hardware conflict. wherever you buy from make sure you get the DVD unit with the PCM to ensure compatability. You will also need an installation kit including the GPS reciever and some wiring cables for the DVD unit from Porsche. Expect to pay some dollars at the local dealer to have the unit coded to the car so it will work. Its not entirely a DIY installation and needs specialist tools to be retro fitted in your car.
  2. I've had yokohama tyres on other cars and can vouch for the dry weather performance, but in the wet they can sometimes let you down. Do these tyres carry the N rating as specified by Porsche?
  3. I beleive some have already asked this in the main dealers. If your car was fittd with the sport chrono pack (ie you have the sport button) then the PSE can be fitted to your car and will work in conjunction with the sport button. If you do not have the sport button then the unit can be fitted but the louder sound comes in with engine rpm rather than a button press. Expect the unit to be about 2000 usd with another 6-8 hours to fit. There is no performance gain from the system ,so you may want to try a tuners exhaust for the same money.
  4. I have factory fit Xenon (gas discharge) on both my Boxster and VW. I would assume that both systems work in a similar way. First there is the headlamp unit itself which is different to the normal headlamp as it has adjusters for the angle of the beam up and down , driven by servo motors. Secondly there will be a tilt or angle sensor , normally mounted on the front and rear axle. This will feed into the ECU to adjust the beam up or down depending if the car is accelerating or braking , or with a load in the front/ rear trunk. Next up is the headlamp wash system which is usually a second pump fitted to the washer bottle with an additional relay to only activate the washers when the lights are on. Finally, I would expect the ECU needs to be reprogrammed to tell it that gas discharge lights are fitted as these draw a much lower current than stock bulbs. Retro fitting the whole kit sounds expensive to me. Have you considered one of the aftermarket HID kits that simply replace the stock bulbs for D2S or D2R gas discharge units with the ballast fitted in the rear of the existing headlamp unit? It may be that the ECU will throw a fault for the lower current , but this may be able to be turned off by the dealer or overcome by fitting a resistor in the headlamp circuit. Try ebay or HID4u.co.uk for some ideas on prices.

I think the "feel " of the car may as much depend on the variable cam timing and differences between the variocam on the 3.2 and variocam plus on the 3.4 engine. given the choice its better to start with the bigger engine and then consider power increases. The 3.2 engine in the 987 seems to top out about 320 bhp in fully tuned form unless you want wild cams. The 3.4 is obviously capable of higher figures , probably closer to 340 bhp. Having driven a 996 C4s I can honestly say that the reveered 911 is not much quicker than the 987 boxster s. Unless money is no object i still think the used 987S is the best value for money boxster / porsche on the market.
  6. I think it is part of the front bumper and not just an add on item. The only Cayman i have seen with this black grille is the techart tuned cayman , this also uses a replacement front nose/ bumper section.

  8. I beleive the 987 Boxster / Cayman use the MOST fibre optic system for communications between the ECU and modules on the vehicle. The radio and bose amplifier are examples of such modules , so retro fitting an OEM navigation unit will require some specialist workshop knowledge and equipment , as the system has to be programmed to accept the new unit. Removing the OEM radio and fitting a new head unit may be simpler if you are looking for an "in dash" navigation system. Again i would opt for an experienced audio fitter to do the job , as there have been horror stories of inexperienced fitters accidentally severing the most cable, resulting in a complete interior strip out to replace the loom. If your only issue is the location of the GPS reciever , you could try mounting the unit under the plastic cowl that covers the lower part of the windshield in the front trunk. This is the OEM location for the GPS reciever and seems to work fairly well. Routing the cable through to the interior of the car should also be relatively simple. I've seen e bay dealers offering retro fit kits for around the 5,000 dollar mark, so this gives an indication of price if you go the OEM equipment route.
  9. Probably the offset will be different as the 986/996 have different offsets and track width to the 997/987. You may be able to sort the issue with spacers. Best to check with porsche the offsets supplied on the new wheels you get and compare to what you have already. The tequipment brochure will give details of the widths and ET offsets for the new model optional alloys.
  10. I have the main unit external to the car on my 987 Boxster. I placed the cable so that is exits the door jamb just above the door at the bottom of the glass section. I dont think the cable is thick enough to cause a permanent indentation in the door seal.
  11. Personally I think it could be costly if the oil carries over to the MAF. I'm sceptical of any real improvements from this type of mod unless it is coupled with an ECU remap. Potentially the air/fuel ratio can get too weak at the top end of the rev range at high speed. The filter has a lower resistance so the forced air percentage increases messing up the factory pre determined fuelling map. Perhaps the plastic baffle on the intake may help to reduce this ram air effect , so the only real improvement would be more intake noise and potentially a slightly quicker throttle resonse. If the resistance to air entering the engine is lower without an ECU remap to compensate , the engine could throw an air mass overange fault or worse still run hot. Typically most ECU's only have a 10% correction built in, to allow for fluctuations in air and fuelling. I've tried these K&N filters on two previous cars and found little benefit but many potential problems. Horses for courses , but in my opinion not a worthwhile performance improvement on its own.
  12. My understanding is that the BOSE sound upgrade has both a software and a hardware elements . The PCM or standard fit audio system has the BOSE amplifier and control software built into it , so if you remove the PCM i'm not sure you will be able to control the amplifier properly since it communicates via the MOST bus system.
  13. Porsche OEM units are made by CTEK , You can buy these conditioning charger units on e bay for about 70 USD.
  14. Unfortunately the hardware is not a DIY install , so there isn't a high demand for the equipment and the resale value may not make it worth taking it out. Typically the PCM units sell on e bay for about 700-800 USD and the DVD drives for about 200 USD. The higher figures of 2000 USD are usually complete systems supplied by those that can install it for you. To be honest , with so many 987's for sale on the market , you may be better leaving the PCM in the car and using this as a selling point to move the car on quickly. Sell the old radio on E bay, as there will be more people looking for a like for like swap with broken or damaged units.
  15. There is an update CD available that takes your software on the PCM from Model level B version 3 to 3.3, the part number is 000.043.205.46.005. The tech bulletin suggests it refers to the post that Loren has inserted in this thread , and also allows for a check / repair of the CD drive. Though i have a copy of the software CD , I haven't been brave enough to update it , as my PCM 2.1 is outside of the model numbers listed on the associated tech bulletin. I have already updated from Level A version 1 to Level B version 3 to allow use of a 2006 map DVD. Even with this update to level 3.3 i'm not sure that the MP3 player facility will be available , as it's possible this is hardware specific rather than software. Since the update of the level A to level B software can be done using the CD drive on the PCM , it's possible this update can also be done in the same way. If there is anyone brave enough to try updating an early version PCM to level 3.3 please post your experiences and results here.
  16. I think you will need to refer to the TSB's on this forum regarding MP3 player compatability. Only the PCM units supplied for MY2006 came with the ability to play MP3 tracks using the front CD drive on the PCM. The earlier versions of PCM can only be upgraded to version 3 software. The later versions of PCM (MY2006) are running version 3.3 currently I beleive.
  17. Officially Porsche will not update your PCM for you , unless you purchase the upgrade pack that includes the map DVD and the two update software CD's. They will also tell you the update has to be done in the workshop using the PWIS tool. The update Package costs about 350 pounds plus VAT, but they will normally do the workshop labour for free. Unofficially it can be done by yourself if you have the Update software. PM me if you want more details
  18. Try ordering the different license plate holder from Porsche (think it is called type 2). The bottom part of the plate holder allows for the supplying dealer's logo. My car came with the PORSCHE logo and liepzig dealer.
  19. I bought a 987 purely on the basis of seat position and comfort (also 6'4"). I see that in the tequipment brochure for the 986 there is a sports recaro syle seat. It's possible that a seat change may solve the problem for taller drivers with a 986.
  20. Is it a permanent move to Europe? If so , I would sell your US version and buy a new (used) one in Europe. Prices are good in europe and you may well get a better spec car than the one you are selling. The USA cars may have a different emission level to Europe and there may also be other differences. To be sure of the exact difference contact your Porsche USA headquarters and ask about the differences between USA and European vehicles. They should be able to get this info from Germany for you. When i imported my LHD boxster from Germany to the UK , Porsche GB contacted stuttgart for this info.
  21. Projector beam lenses are not unique to Gas discharge lights any more. The headlight washers are a mandatory requirement (in europe anyway) for gas discharge lights. Possible that the USA market vehicles may be supplied without headlight washers with gas discharge but unlikely. Only real way to tell is remove the headlight and take the rear cover off (look for the ballast units) or check the options on the car service book.
  22. I beleive there is a TSB available on this forum for retro fitting the PCM into the Boxster / Cayman. If you pay the subscription fee to the forum , you will be able to access this info. As to fitting the unit in your car, I would think that the system has to be re configured to accept the PCM so that it can communicate with the instrument cluster and convenience parts of the system. The telephone capability requires an additional module that needs to be wired into the pcm. Whilst the merits of tom tom are notable , I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the functions of the Porsche unit , particularly the TMC or traffic message system. If it were me, i would try to get the DVD unit to suit this model of PCM. Again on the TSB part of the forum you can find the details of compatability of PCM with DVD unit and Bose amplifier. Be aware that matching of hardware is essential. The PCM is also designed to work with or without the sport chrono pack plus and the Bose sound upgrade. If you have a second hand unit , it may have previously been configured for accessories you do not have (6 Cd changer, Sport Chrono, Telephone Module, Bose sound upgrade) again the porsche dealer should be able to sort this out. Bearing in mind that Porsche charge about 110 pounds an hour for labour , I'd expect little change from 500 pounds if they were to fit and configure it for you.
  23. Back to the topic..I beleive the bypass pipes are there to connect the pre muffler to the exhaust tip. The E bay link also has details of the suppliers main shop. You could try dropping thenm an e mail for more info.. ;)
  24. I see from the Milltek web site that they offer two exhaust upgrades for the boxster 987. Both versions are based around the replacement of the manifolds (headers) and the primary cats with a hiflo version. The difference is that one also includes a high flow set of secondary cats in the main muffler. The only benefit of replacing the second set of cats with hi flow items is a more sporty sound , no performance gain. Therefore it suggests that the way to improve performance is to replace the upper part of the system from block to primary cats , the way to make it sound sporty is to work on the rear muffler and the secondary cats.   25. Hi Toolpants... From what you have seen so far , would you think it possible to put a carrera or aerokit front bumper onto a 987 boxster if the front wings and headlamps from a 997 were also fitted in place of the boxster items ? Other than the indicator/ front fog lights being different would the headlamp with their rear connections into the front wings be a direct fit ? There seem to be a number of styling companies offering 997 front bumper and lights styling for the 986 and 996. This to me suggests it is almost a straight swap to update or to fit 997 parts onto a boxster 986/987. Is this correct ?
