  1. The Bentley is the best automotive DIY repair manuals out there. Sometimes they are just good and sometimes they are great. The Porsche line is great, You can find it used on amazon or such for $50, new I believe is about $90. I always make the comment that nobody should even unscrew their oil drain plug w/o a Bentley in their hand. Always avoid the online and DVD and get the real book in your hand. Combine the Bentley, with the Porsche tech manuals (can be found illegually hacked on the net) combined with this site and a hammer, you are good to go. This list will always put you on the right track for common failure trend and shortcuts to procedures but the Bentley is invaluable to an owner. Now if you are not going to do your own work ever and drive it straight to the Porsche dealer then you'll do fine w/o! Just google it.
  2. Andy, You nailed great information for all to help as I have not specific experience with this. I would definitely test the switch located in the door catch mechanism. Pulling the door open is easy, but you better have a Bentley. If you don't have the Bentley you are breaking the 2nd rule of owning a Boxster! The first is belonging to Renntech, so good job on #1. I really think all these items are related because one can replicate about everything with a door open! There is a chance the window drop down function could because of frayed cables (very common failure trend) but I wouldn't suspect that until you get your switch tested out. Did all this start at the exact same time? Lastly, My in a 1997 so I don't know if and when they added the windows being able to be put down from the door lock. This sounds like one of the after market modules on the market. Maybe someone could set me straight but if it is a module (and a bad one), maybe it is causing the issue! Shawn
  3. Andy, I think you need to give us some more info then "it thinks". What is the specific symptom. Lights stay on? Locks will not open? Window doesn't auto drop or doesn't auto go back up? What acutually does happen (or not) when you push the lock catch in all the way (with the door open)? Does the light go on after the time delay? New car to you? Wrecked? That tells if something was hardwired wrong... Lots of stuff to give us specifics on and then the exerts can start determining the cause of the issues.
  4. The switch is in the "stricker" assembly. If you put your finger in the stiker claw and move it up (door open) two clicks you'll see your window go back up to the seal position. Make sure you lift the door handle again before you close the door to reopen the stricker lock, or you'll have a rude awakening of window on frame!
  5. I noted that my factory CDR-210 is not liking bump roads. The source will change from Radio to CD if the car gets bouncing. Is this a common failure trend item? Anyone else experienced this? Shawn
  6. I agree on the tread wear. I have 15K on mine and they are yet to show much wear. For daily fun driving and needing all-season dependablity go with the Kumhos. I got mine at tirerack.com. Next day delivery but I'm a state away. Get them mounted and balanced ONLY on a Hunter road force tester. You'll be happy you did...
  7. Khumo, Khumo, Khumo and the 4th wheel I'd put another Khumo on... P.K.
  8. Yes you are doing something wrong! You have to give Loren some $$$ and become a contributing member first! Donate through paypals and you are "on the team". The donate is at the top under the renntech.org logo. It's worth it alone for the TSB but there are other perks that I forget at the moment, another poster can chime in. Which reminds me it's been a year since I last donated! Shawn
  9. ****! Was hoping for a great fire sale price! Thanks Loren.
  10. I'm a bit confused and need some help. Found the expansion tank for sale on ebay at this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche-Box...sspagenameZWD1V Doing some research before I contact Sunset. Anyways, I know this tank has had some revsions so I suspeted that tank is not the latest as the part number is 996.106.147.07 and the online parts (US) here shows it SS'd by 996.106.147.08. Here is my question... Everyone is commenting these tanks are $220+ from posts and online price searches. Obviously it will be early next week before I get Sunset to comment...why does this only show $70.00!!!! Has the price dropped recently due to the million and one failures of these...ya know the economics of the part have brought it down! Or am I just getting this part search all wrong? Comments? Thanks. Shawn
  11. I'm with Chris the VR is usually always to blame for over or under voltage on a low miles vehicle. Now if you had big miles I would get a rebuild due to brush wear. If the VR is external on this unit it would be cheap and easy.
  12. Never done an alt on my boxster, but looking at Bentley it's as easy as it looks. If you've done any alternators it's the same theory. One bolt to hold pivot and another on the slider. I'd say maybe the one idler comes off with it. Get your parts from sunset imports. Find the link that says Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost under the quick menu. Best price on the net is going to come from these guys, otherwise you'll be paying top dollar at the local Porsche dealer. Don't know if this is a generic unit used on other auto applications. I live in a small town where I can get an alternator rebuilt for $75 and back within a couple of days, that would be the best way to go for me. I'm guessing it's a bosche like everything else in the world. You can use the part search function at the top to to get the right number and start to search the net for retails prices for new.
  13. Look up the how to put the top in service mode to get at the alternator...it's covered in the Bentley! Go to autozone or other car place. put top in service mode to access alternator and let them test it for free. All the corporate car parts places do it now. If you don't own a Bentley buy one now! Shawn
  14. Tom, not quite understanding your Bentley concern becuase everything you need is on 70-3 to 704. But more importantly I don't think those side needs to come off to get at the CD caddy. It's been awhile since I've been in there but it just slides forward, posibly making it easier to pull out the bottom one. The trick is to have a plastic trim tool to help coax out the caddy. If you don't have one these are the tools window repairs guys use and cost about $1.50 at a car parts store. It will keep you from harming the plastic parts. Shawn
  15. no help here but share photos...a lowered westy sounds like sacrilege but I want to see it! I new a guy who put Saab seats in his vanagon and they fit great and extra comfy. I would think the P seats are more for looks that long road haul, unless you has skinny hips! share photos!
  16. I'm with TP, the factory tool doesn't fit as well!
  17. I have had no issues with my P lights but I can tell you with other euro cars I've had issues with the plastic parts failing in the light assembly not allowing for a good contact. Hopefully you examined all the contact points. The Bentley has detailed circuits but if you don't have one send me a PM, I may have a PDF you would want to see. Shawn
  18. Thanks for the input. I'm not novice to the uses of good paint, I am know to re-vinal and paint anything! This may be the best solution if I don't find any classy "bling" for that grill area. Some nice aluminum honeycomb would work.
  19. Great info, we'd all love a good write up for when our RMS goes! I'm always curious how much work can be done with the engine in the car or if benching it is the easiest way. Any idea what may have caused the hole in the bellows? Old age, tear, ect...
  20. Thanks, didn't have my Bentley with me and read of the AOL failures before...but couldn't recall if that was what you were referencing. So dropping the trany was very do-able just with the car on jack stands?
  21. Boy the main seal is clean on this! Very helpful photos too. I have two questions... 1. What is the AOS 2. Is this engine benched or did you just drop the trany and have the engine suspended with the special tool? Thanks. Shawn
  22. Every time I wash my car I marvel at how much I dislike the front bumper air intakes for the two radiators. They are discolored and ugly. Does anyone make an shiny/happy replacement that still allows for proper cooling?
  23. Get a bentley too! Special allen tool is in the bag to assist...if they haven't been out in some time they can be a bit tricky. Be patient not to break to twist anything.
  24. Plus severely neglected fluid with water an give the caliper pistons a short and sticky life. If you are due for a major service then do the brake fluid so you know where you stand, then a brake job. While there you or a tech can check out the calipers.
  25. I removed the neg from the battery when I replaced my air bag frame. Don't recall the alarm going off for that!
