  1. Yep Porsche box with speakers. I have to get another cable (disc changer to head) from Becker so I'll bug them about the other stuff. Any part numbers out there from Porsche or am I just going to have to explain this to some poor sales tech? or is Becker really organized it what they designed and sold to Porsche? I know it's not rocket science to hook the speaker wires to the head but the harness would make it clean and easy! Shawn
  2. I'm really have trouble sorting through all the stereo upgrade information for my basic need. I purchased this winter the rear speaker shelf dirt cheap on scambay. Until I find a 6x40w amp I'm planning on running the rears from the head. A few on here have posted that that the head power is acceptable and since I'm only looking for a moderate improvement for top down driving this may solve my need. What wire do I want (part number?) from the factory rear speaker box to the head, and what pins do I need to "knock out" on the head that I have read in posts. Any other comments would be appriciated. Shawn Ohio
  3. Mine is 10 years old and 100% gone when I took it apart. Someone could correct me here but since there appears to be no TSB on this I'm quite sure nothing has been updated. I'm sure time, temp and humidty are the factors that contribute the most. My car spent it's life in Miami before coming to me in Ohio. This is now my third used car from Florida and the temp sure doesn't a differnt wear on cars from there then the salt here in Ohio. Hose, foam and glue are rather beat-up after 5-10 years down there. I have owned several Saabs that have a similar "foam breakdown" problem. My 1987 had this issue and the same model 10 years latter had the same issue. usually failure trends that take 5+ years to show up don't get updated by the manufacture IMHO. then again one could argue it could have been a quality control issue with glue or foam but I would guess they were just not up to the job. Many on here write about shooting foam, but I believe I am the only one on the board to really ge to the origin of the offending foam.
  4. Not true from my findings/reading. You have no idea what that code is related to without running a PST2 or Durametric against it. It could be the common and simple drivers side seat belt contacts triggering the SRS light which has no affect on airbad deployment. And to answer the initial question it has no ill affect on the rest of the vehicle nor the SRS system. Drive it forever if you must. I'm sure you'll find the seat belt contact culprit the most likly supsect. Check the TSB related to it. Shawn
  5. Mine cracked (old window) on a 64 degree day! Didn't even think I had anything to worry about!
  6. This winter I'm getting 325 miles out of a tank with 90% freeway drive, top up and mid octane gas. I had two tanks of 350 over the holiday with long runs to family at moderate speeds... on average I'm doing 300 miles before the light comes on with 70 highway 30 city with lots of high rpm sprints for fun... Shawn Ohio PS my main car is in the shop so I'm driving my 986 7 days a week (100 miles per day) to work for the last month, ouch!!
  7. It's already in the name... Lor-renntech.org get's my vote!
  8. yea but why would it "cycle on" everytime it decels? the unit only kicks off under hard driving (i believe over 4500RPM or such).
  9. Thanks. I actually have the opposite whe the AC is turned on. It shoots up to 1100rpm then comes back to 800rpm and all is fine. Although the drop when decel doesn't cause a stall I figured it would increase until this eventually happens. Had this issue on a Vw Vanagon with AC that progressivly got worse. Still hope to hear from others who have lived with for years or not. Shawn
  10. I don't run with the AC Auto system on much during the winter as the extra pull of the compressor makes the clutch feel heavier plus it lowers the temp of the interior a couple of degrees in the coldest winter days. nothing big or concerning, just the way i like it. Since we've had much rain (instead of snow) lately I've been needing the defrost and thus AC system. I've noted when I take the car out of gear while decelerating and the RPM head toward idle if the AC system is "on" then the idle will drop 200-300 RPM below idel for a sec or two before finding the right spot. Doesn't do this on decel with the AC compressor disengaged? Any ideas what causes this? Does this occur on your car? Shawn
  11. yea but it still seams odd that Porsche can get away with a TSB on an item releated to Air Bag deployment system and it not be a recall!
  12. We'll I way out of warranty and I didn't make a claim it had been done and returned. I was just curious if this was considered a saftey recall and thus covered regardless of ownership and year. I had a Jetta and Jeep both as a 2nd owner and was able to get recall work for saftey items. TSB doesn't mean recall, does it? Shawn
  13. great info. I was very curious why the SRS system cares if you are "belted" in. Seems it has two levels of trigger, eh? Another interesting point you make is that only a very small percentage of cars had the recall related to ignition switch yet 10s of thousands have had a similar but common failure to. Most who have replaced their faulty ignition switches shared the same failure points the recall mentions! your comment on Porsche being immune to saftey recall makes sense. Their entire model line in one year doesn't equal one model of car from Chevy or Ford! Our government puts their resources where they get the most bang for the buck... plus we know many Porsche owners can be conned into paying for service that should be free or less expensive! (oh, did i just say that out loud?)
  14. We'll based on what I read from this board and others we/they know there is a "history of prior fixes"! I'm willing to do the work myself but I doubt they would cough up the part...they want my labor dollars! So Porsche is now the most profitable car company in the world? If so it's amazing what this Boxster did for them! Then again they could adopt this policy because many of the ownes have more $$ then desire to get stuff fixed for free! Do you know if the ABS light indicated the bag system is turned off from this error, or will it still "fire"?
  15. ah! so it may not even have been a recall! i thought i read that somewhere in my internet travels. So I just checked the NHTSA website it and it not for my year (1997) but I will check some other shortly. Worth mentioning there is a recall on the ignition switch that so many of us have had to deal with but interestingly Porsche didn't tell me when I had mine in for this very issue...which I chose to do myself. Here is the info: Recall Number: 98V113000 Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE IGNITION SWITCH CAN CRACK AND CAUSE ELECTRICAL FAILURES. Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE FAILURE OF THE AIR CONDITIONING, HEATER BLOWER, HEADLAMPS, AND WINDSHIELD WIPERS. Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW TYPE IGNITION SWITCH. Notes: OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN JUNE 8, 1998. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT PORSCHE AT 1-800-545-8039. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
  16. I'm rather curious to how car companies are liable with defined saftey recalls for used (2nd owner) or older (10 years old) cars. Seems to me they would be concerned with liablity and "doing the right thing" regardless of age or ownership. I have the common airbag error for the driver's side seat buckle failure. I have reset it about once a month since having the car but needed it twice this week. I really hate the idea of going to the dealer unless I know I can get this done for free! Otherwise I'll do it myself... I've tried the contactor cleaner and am ready for the real fix. What experience have others had getting this fixed on used cars. Seems Porsche would be really concerned about a silly failure that may deactive the airbag system! Shawn
  17. Duremetric pulls three codes. The 2nd two Loren and others told me are common to see with little concern, the first one is new: 49 No communication with PST 2 This fault is stored if the K-lead is short Status: Not present Number of times DTC present: 1 41 No engine start possible Transponder pill faulty or not present Status: Not present Number of times DTC present: 2 33 No passenger compartment monitoring Interior monitoring sensor faulty Status: Not present Number of times DTC present: 1 Any ideas what could cause this or where to look for short in the system? The only thing that has changed in the last months is I replaced the alarm horn. ABS code kicked on this week to related to the seat buckle failure trend. Reset it again... Shawn Durametric_Diagnost.pdf
  18. paid $12,400 for my 97 with 60K miles and little history. turned out to be perfect other then typical issues common to all 986 (horn, ignition switch, SRS light). i'd rate the body and interior an 8 out 10. you need to check ebay as i've seen some amazing stuff under 15K this week on 97-99s...
  19. I'll follow up if the noise returns and see if we are "in sync"...
  20. Really! I think we are on apples and organges. I'll clarify as I don't think that applies in my case...you have a differnt kind of squeek for sure. Mine is from the clutch pedal not the acutal internal clutch. Shawn
  21. Believe it or not, owing to the fact that I couldn't contort myself to get a visual in a cluttered garage, I blindly sprayed some WD 40 in the general vicinity of the pivot- voila`, noise gone- good as old. Go ahead, close your eyes and take a shot! Good luck. Hey I'm all about the blind squirrel finding a nut from time to time! Will give it shot. If i could fit under there to do the ignition switch I'm sure I can find the pivot point! Any the noise has been gone for how long?
  22. while depressing or releasing the clutch (5 speed with 68K) it's really starting to creek at the pivot of the clutch. does it just need grease, a worn bushing or is there something out of tolerance? if it just needs grease...just a low temp lithum do the job? Shawn
  23. bingo. got it. the previous owner of my car had some issues with the shelfs of the center console. my lower one pulls right out and the 3 prong female connector was staring right at me on my 97. i was hoping to get power with the stereo on off but the ignition switched will work fine for me. thanks for your help on this. what is this connector for, did you say something about phone? if so i'm curious to why a 12v unswitched and another 12v switched. additionally you made mention of grounding to the sirius receiver. do you mean other then ther ground on the 12v connector into the unit? i've read a bit with board members talking about buzzing and having to add isolators or gizmos to help with direct line inputs. shawn
  24. Chris, Perfect, this is just what I want. Is this connector on the left or right side of the center console? You say pull up carpet could you be more specific to the location of the connector. Since it comes off the steremo I would assume it's close. should I take the center console side panels off? I might work on this tomorrow and just hack into the connectors. Thanks. Shawn
