  1. OK, first off 3mm is huge. Its more like 3 thou of an inch. I am not sure of the exact measurements but I have seen them use feeler guages to check it. If you have 3mm clearance you got big problems. There are several TSB's to look at. The one your talking about I think is called: Crankshaft Seal - Flywheel Side (R & R Procedures) But there is another you should get: Engine Oil Leak By Crankshaft Seal (Flywheel Side) (superceded) Make certain they replace the engine block bolts and IMS flange bolts with the new blue ones. Make certain they handle the seal correctly and install it dry (not pre-oiled) using the mandril tool. Finally, you should be displaying the "RMS Failed" image as seen in my sig below. Get it here: http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/rmsclubfailed2.jpg I've just had my 7th fitted!
  2. In my car, when PSM kicks in a red triangle in the dash with "!" in middle lights up. It's not a fault (according to my book) it just signifies that PSM has kicked in. It goes off just as quick as it comes on.
  3. Well I do my own oil changes and I use a standard chain based oil filter wrench. There's plenty of room under there to get at it.
  4. That's a good question. The 030 is indeed M030 but I wonder if it is the same 030 as European spec since you are in Canada. It is my understanding that 030 is not an option to US cars because it breaks the vehicle regulations...I could be wrong on this. But for Canada 030 may be same as ROW.
  5. I just sussed your VIN number problem. The 7th digit from the right is not a "5" its an "S" for sugar. That did it. BTW: your prety sparse Carrera is a nice machine indeed with those options. Especialy 030 Congrats.
  6. I got your email re your VIN number not working in the VINDecoder. The checksum digit doesn't compute. Either you read it wrong from your car window or you have an invalid Porsche VIN. The VINdecoder is tested by running a file with just under 1000 Porsche 17 digit VIN numbers of various types for different model cars including the latest cars. So I doubt there is a problem with the decoder. Re your option sticker details: This is what I have collected so far. Hope Loren doesn't mind the huge list. 001 Carrera Cup Version 002 Touring Version 003 Group N GT1 009 3 speed sportomatic transmission 018 Sport steering wheel with elevated hub 020 Speedometer with 7. I have parked my 996 in the busiest streets in the city centre of Liverpool. And for anywone who knows Liverpool that is as risky as it can be! Once had the cab top stabbed and a few times had near parked door collision scratches. But that's what I pay the insurance for. .....but I do worry about it when it's parked up and usually will look for the safest place to park. Here's some other novel ideas :clapping:
  8. Thanks Loren, Rob, that is bad news.......O well, back to the drawing board I guess. I wonder if PAG just buy time with these suggested changes. Let's ship a red coloured seal next and tell them to fit this instead. That will give us another year!
  9. Loren, Jeff, The "Blue Bolts" mentioned in the TSB 1359 "Engine Oil Leak By Crankshaft Seal". Some questions: Looking at this, it is a simple procedure: remove bolts and replace them. That's it. Do you know if there are any gotchas in this process? Also are these bolts standard parts that they are likely to have in or will they have to order them specially? Do you know if it is now standard procedure to replace the bolts when replacing the seal in the US? I guess this is a hard one: Do you know of any cases where the bolts have been fitted but the RMS fault showed up again afterwards? Many thanx to you both and happy Xmas,
  10. its a joke isn't it. The fact that this RMS problem is still around in even in brand new cars. At least you will get it fixed under warranty. I hear that the 997 has it too! If it was me I would take it in and "demand" in writing exactly what has caused this thing to go wrong and why it's so prelevent. Since your car's so new, explain in your letter that while it's fine under warranty now, what will happen if you get continued RMS problems out of warranty. Also, will the RMS problem show up in a CARFAX list (I think this is the US version of our HPPI) and thus it may affect residuals. Unless owners (especially new owners) start to voice their concerns in writing they will just let this problem go on and we end up with the problem when the warranty runs out. My car's on its 6th RMS and out of warranty even though the 1st was reported at 27,000 miles and just out of warranty. Guess who has to pay to get it fixed?
  11. Hroussard, any chance of the URL for that info, I would like to see the pics they refer to. Some Qs: Where does one buy the extinguisher mount? Do the mount's require specific model extinguishers? Do you have to take the seat oit to fit the mount?
  12. I guess you just rip the old one off and pop on the new one and thats it. But you will probably confuse the electrics. May want to discconnect the airbag light on the dash pod.
  13. This is standard on ROW models. As I understand it isn't an option in the US/Canada. I think it should work so long as you have a matched keyfob & receiver and your ECU is programmed to use it. But I have to ask why. I have that feature but never use it. It's not very reliable either. I mean you have to point the keyfob at the inside mirror and wait until the top closes, windows close etc and all the time standing there like a dork with your thumb on the keyfob. IMHO it's a useless feature.
  14. Could it be just a case of bad fuel? Does this happen intermitently or do you get CE light on all the time?
  15. djantlive, please do keep us all posted on the outcome.
  16. If you have searched this and other forums you will have come accross my many postings on the RMS problem. I even went to the trouble of building a web site just for RMS plauged 996/986 owners with a view to collecting and collating this information. But it soon dawned on me that in order to catalogue this information and not have it tainted by bogus and duplicate posters is to ask for VIN number and some more private details of the car. This of course is not practical and so I canned the project. In fact the VINDecoder was born out of this work. The original purpose of the decoder was to verify that a given VIN is kosher and applies to the posters car. For example, say the poster enters a valid VIN but he says his car is a Cab but the VIN says its an 02 Turbo then I can figure its a bogus entry. Anyway, what I am saying here is that any collected, collated and catalogued information that would have any use (whatever that may be) in pursuing legal action of some sort would have to be bonafide and without possibility of corruption or duplication. But the simple fact is that most folks won't be in a hurry to give out the VIN number of their $70,000 car. After all, the VIN can in most countries be traced to address. Do I need to say any more. I think your intentions are good and appreciated but the fact is it aint worth the effort. If such a site that collected this information was operated by Porsche themselves (very unlikely) or say PCNA or PCGB the officialness of these sites would warrant a poster to give up his VIN. Otherwise they just wont do it. And without the VIN there is no way to build a database of any form to hand to PAG. One way I am trying to bring the RMS problem to light is to ensure that there are regular discussions on all the forums about it. I am also asking everyone who has had an RMS problem to display the image (see below) to support the cause. I hope that with so many RMS plagued owners displaying this image that the media will grab on to the problem and this may put even more pressure on PAG to give us an official answer to the problem. But even after my own 6 RMS replacements and fighting with the might of PCGB and threatening legal action, the fight continues. PAG simply refuse to acknowledge that there is an RMS problem in these cars and as such they put the owness (cost of repair) often back into the customers hands. In the UK that "often" is translated to "every time". I would like to see a lot more people writing letters to PAG, PCNA, PCGB, the mags and the OPCS in protest to this problem but depsite my repetitious postings in this regard, it just does not happen......PAG simply can't loose.
  17. I had a problem like this once when I replaced the dash speakers. Turned out the depth of the new speakers was just too deep and the flexing of the car would cause them to bottom out on the car's frame. I changed the speakers again to Focals and the clicking/tapping noise went away. If you have played wit your dash speakers then the problem may be there. Another thing you might like to try is to remove the dash pod and then replace it again.
  18. There's an interesting article with very good instructions for DIY replacing a gearbox/clutch and/or RMS in a boxster in this months (November) issue of 911 & Porsche World. 99% of this applies to the 996 too.
  19. Some parts for the Getrag G96 gearbox are avaialble from the parts counter. In particular the bearings, main shaft, seals and even some of the gear cogs. But by and large only a fraction of the parts are available from Porsche parts. The other thing to do is to find a good independant who has a stock of duff gearboxes which he can maybe pilfer the parts from to fix up your gearbox. This is what I am doing. My independent Tech9 Motorsport in Liverpool, UK specialises in building race cars. They take the standard gearbox out and replace it with race spec versions. They have a small mountain of used gearboxes....none of which are complete....from which they will be attempting to rebuild my gearbox from. There is no guarantee of course that they will be able to get the part(s) I need from their gearbox collection but the chances are extremely optomistic.....and besides, if they can't get the bits then he will source a good used one and replace it in whole.....which is what I would have had to do anyway. It's worth asking around.
  20. A sound clip might help us diagnose it more. A squeak from the engine could be anything from a noisy mounting bush to a jammed parrot in the air intake manifold :jump:
  21. Here's a cheap way of getting 50 hp: http://www.angelfire.com/nc2/mycoffeecan/page1.html
  22. But putting bypass piped on only makes the car sound louder....very much louder....uncomfortably louder imho. They won't give you any HP increase. As you said Karl, the back pressure is seen by the cats not the mufflers so all you are doing by replacing the mufflers with bypass pipes is just making your car more noisy (although there is some slight absorbtion of backbreasure in the mufflers too.). I accept that you drop 50lbs or so when you get rid of your stock mufflers but this isn't really going to increase HP significantly. You could do the same by getting rid of your spare tyre. Also, the Fabspeed Max flow mufflers are less than half the weight of stock and can better the sound while still losing some weight. If you want to increase your HP with any real significance you will have to go for an SC. By the time you spend out for exhaust mods, headers, remapped ECU etc for an extra 15HP or so and at the same time blowing out any warranty you may have, you might as well go the whole hog and SC it......or you could of course trade up to a TT ;)
