  1. Thanks Victor - which cables are you refering to? Do you mean the cables that are hidden in the beading at the edge of the top which should be in the frame channel, or are there some other cables? The cables that hold the top into the frame channels look to be about right, as they hold the top into the frame nicely when guided into the channels. Graham
  2. For some reason my roof keeps on missing the channels at the sides when I put it up. See the pics below... It's easy enough to gently guide either side into place with a finger, but I can't reach both sides at once, and of course putting the top up whilst in the car is a real pain! The roof does close all the way - it just looks bad and also whistles a lot at speed. I found a TSB for the same problem for a Boxster, but the 996 roof doesn't seem to have the same bits to tweak. Any ideas on how to fix this would be much appreciated!
  3. I just put a Pioneer Z1 into my 02 996. Wonderful toy!... You need to move the A/C controls to just above the shifter and cut a plastic bar which seperates the radio and where the A/C was, but other than that, it's easy. You can plug the head unit into the power amp (pre-MOST!), and the GPS receiver fits under the cover where the alarm light fits. Cheaper than the Porsche unit, and IMHO much better unit, including ability to add XM, Sirius, Bluetooth for cellphone, iPod or other MP3 player (I've got my Zune hooked up), and also rear view camera (so you can see the engine spoiler go up?)
  4. Couple of interesting ideas there - Thanks! I'll try swapping the front wheels around when I get back from my trip this week. Thanks All.
  5. Took the wheel off today and had a good look around. There is nothing caught in the brake/rotor assembly, and the hub rotates fairly freely by hand. Any other suggestions? Cheers, G
  6. The noise sounds (unfortunately) more like a rumbling bearing, and doesn't vary with the fan speed. I can't track down its exact location, but it does seem to be coming from deep in the center of the dashboard....
  7. 2002 996 Cab C2, 24000 miles. I changed to my winter wheels and tires a couple of weeks ago, after not being able to get the car home (the big Seattle ice/snow storm) for four days. I'm now on 17' wheels. I've started to notice a noise coming from the left wheel (I think) which sounds a lot like the brakes rubbing - it's car speed dependent, but I don't think that applying the brake makes much difference at all. The noise also seems loudest at low speeds - 10~15 mph - and disappears completely at a stop. I've checked the brake pads, and there is plenty of meat left on them, and the rotor looks fine. Tire looks OK as well, and is correctly inflated. The fact that it appears to started very shortly after I swapped the wheels makes me suspicious that I've done something bad, but I can't think what. Or perhaps it's a wheel bearing going out? :( Any suggestions? Thanks, Graham
  8. 2002 996 Cab C2, 24000 miles. A minute or so after I turn on the A/C in my car, I get a whirring/whining noise which seems to be coming from in front of the dashboard - from inside it sounds like it's coming from the battery compartment. The noise is engine speed dependent, and once it starts it can be turned on or off via the A/C switch. It's obviously A/C related, but does anyone have any idea what it could be? I'm hoping it's nothing more serious than that coolant needs topping up (is there any way to check this myself) but I suppose it could be something worn or broken... Any ideas anyone? Cheers, Graham
  9. The codes seem to point to a possible problem with cylinder 2. It may be a bit old fashioned, but have you thought of pulling the plugs and "reading" them. You can tell a lot from the color and condition of a spark plug (search the internet, there are several sites with good pictures of plugs and what the different appearances mean). I don't know how difficult is to get to the plugs on a 996 though.... If it is a problem with cylinder 2, I would think that narrows it down to a bad connection, bad coil, bad plug or bad injector, all of which you could test by swapping them with another cylinder and seeing if the fault moves as well. Graham
  10. If you do go for a warranty, go for an EXclusionary one, not an INclusionary one. With the exclusionary warranties, everything is covered except components they specifically list. And check out the background of the company very thoroughly - there is a history of them going under and leaving their customers without any cover or any way to get their money back.
  11. If I was in your position, I'd go for the Boxster, 'cos I love convertibles. I had a Boxster S in 2000, and it was a great car. I've now got a Carrera 2 Cab, and it's a very slightly better car in my opinion overall, but the Boxster was more "chuckable" than the 911 is, and a more practical car (two trunks - if you have VERY young kids the 2 "not quite" seats in the 911 may be of more use to you though. On the other hand, I would think the newer Boxster will have more depreciation than the older 911, but that's just an uninformed guess.
  12. I think your cluster actually has this ability - it's just turned off. If you have a good relationship with your local Porsche dealer, go talk to him about turning it on.
  13. You could try taking the hardtop off and putting back on again, in case a seal is crimped or whatever. Also see if cracking a window opens stops it or not (internal/external pressure). Finally, get a buddy in the passenger seat so they can quickly identify approximately where the noise is coming from. Oh - and wear mechanics overalls when doing this .. I'm sorry officer, I was doing a diagnostic test.... :-)
  14. So I'm just about to close the deal on a really nice '02 Cabriolet. :jump: It's got the standard setup for audio, and I want to move the AC controls down and put in a 2 DIN in dash Audio/Navigation system. But which one? Both the Eclipse and the Pioneer units look good, but it's difficult to work out which is the better one to actually use on a day to day basis. if you've looked into this and are willing to pontificate in public, I'd value your 2c worth... Oh, and thoughts on upgrading speakers, positioning bass units etc would also be appreciated. Cheers, Graham
