It's a fact that the front airbag sensors are located under/in front of the head light frames left and right, anyway, i've never heard a story like yours, the sensor can be triggered, in case of accident, but the airbag should have a confirmation from the control box to go off, in other words, the impact should by strong enough. If i were you, i let read out/check the car with a PIWIS.
  2. Usually these things will crack after time by harder than normal pedal pressure, caused by a worn clutch assembly, or after an intervention, clutch partial replacement etc., a incorrect setting of the self compensating pressure plate (997)
  3. The build in membrane will leak internally after a few years.
  4. I understand that the CEL is caused by misfires, however it does not explain that the CEL is lit after standstill with the key in the ignition, unless it is a coincidence. I would check the car with a PIWIS tool, especially the potential misfires and replaced the coils and plugs ASAP. The rest of the maintenance list can be done later on inclusive the serpentine belt at 90.000 Km. Take note that a belt replacement is not on the list, only a check, you must ask it by yourself and is very important to prevent issues.
  5. From MY03 are the exhaust manifold bolts better quality and much easier to remove for all M96 engines, it's a consolation.

You are right about that, similar systems are also included with cylinder leak test device, most of the forum users are enthusiasts and have not the experience and tools, experience is the mean part of knowledge, to work on engines as a pro. Any intervention seems simple at a forum but it is unfortunately not, they not always see the potential consequences of their, well meaning, interference. A shop manual and the right tools are essential and the absolute minimum to help compensate the lack of experience. If it was all so easy, mechanics and workshops were then no longer necessary.
  7. 1) Water Pump 2) Replace 3) Yes 996 (left side) in driving direction.
  8. The CTEK (same as Porsche) can be used the year around without problems, once the battery is fully charged, the device goes automatically, alternately from maintain to trickle charge function as needed.
  9. Looks like a power or ground break, inside the head light, connectors or wiring turn signal front left, i would check that first.
  10. Comes the smoke from one or both exhaust tips? From only one tip could be an issue on the relevant cylinder bank, on both tips something general as a crankcase breather issue, too high oil level, etc.
  11. The CTEC device is able to charge the battery for more than 95%, the car alternator in optimal condition and circumstances only 85%, enough for regular use but problematic after long standstill, given the considerable decrease of power when not in use. A CTEC or similar device is recommended in your case.
  12. What kind of error you looking for, under any conditions, if you do not have the exact code (mentioned) Have i missed something?
  13. Clogged air filter, MAF, O2 sensors, all visible with a PIWIS on "Actual Values" menu and a good four gas tester (HC - CO - CO2 - O2)
  14. A little shock is normal, when you put the Tip from N to D, while the car is still in motion
  15. Are both turn signals out, front and rear? Do they work all four using the hazard switch?
  16. The special tools are needed for pre 03 M96 engines: 1) to hold the camshafts in place while removing the valve covers, except by the both separate front bearings, the shafts are only hold by the covers inside bearings which are build as a one part unit, the tools prevent the shafts to jump off timing. ( from 03 the shafts are hold by separate bearings, the covers can be removed without tools) 2) they are needed to work on the gearing of the shafts (loosen and fasten) 3) work on the timing chain/adjuster to prevent off timing jump created by a loose chain. Use the TDC pin on the front of the engine, to lock the crankshaft and the lock tool on the rear of the camshafts, the timing will always be as it should without problems. Boxer engines can be placed on TDC in two different positions, depending which cylinder bank, TDC END COMPRESSION is what you need and difficult to see without removing the valve cover, with the tools it's piece of cake and 100% safe. Without the tools is it a matter of luck, it can end badly.
  17. Why not leave the engine idle for a couple of seconds without the belt, if the squeal is gone you know for sure it's related to the attributes driven by the belt, if not the engine/clutch assembly should be suspected. You should not have to be a mechanic to do that.
  18. This warning (lightning) refers to "multiple systems fail" go to workshop, i would do that to be sure.
  19. I assume that what you call " a fault message pop up" was a text message, but you have not mentioned exactly what the message contains. It should help if you do that, then maybe we can help you to find out in which control box the fault is stored, DME, comfort, combi instrument, etc.
  20. All you need is a PIWIS or similar diagnostic tool to read out the present fault codes, most common are sensor failures, check if all of the rear sensors are free of scratches and damage, usually both outside sensors (above the exhaust tips) and connectors are full of mud, try to clean them. If no result, get the codes read.
  21. The culprit is in first place the electric part of the switch, please do a search, this issue has been discussed many times.
  22. Return less system means that there is no longer a return line from the engine to the tank, in this case the pressure regulator, short return line (calibrated hole), fuel filter are all part of the fuel pump unit inside the tank. Bosch systems use the return as supply pressure, the more the fuel return get squeezed, the higher the supply pressure will be. I hope this is a little clearer.
  23. BTW, per the Owner's Manual, the digital instrument lights will remain illuminated for 4 minutes after you leave the car. But should go out immediately after locking the doors with the remote control. 986 2003 Euro version. A defective combi instrument is not excluded.
  24. They probably forgot to push the separate connectors in, on the rear (sideways) of the headlights.

I don't have the exact pressure schedule in front of me, but 7 bar (= 7Kg/cm²) at idle is more than (in general, for most of Bosch systems) needed, i doubt if the engine will run under this conditions. I would check the quantity (amount) of fuel flow first, partial clogged fuel filter, partial clogged or clamped fuel lines (inclusive return line, fuel pressure is controlled by the variable opening and closing of the return line by the fuel pressure regulator(s), can cause that phenomenon. A worn fuel pump act a little different, but i would check that out as well. Just found the values for 997 which are approx. the same and may used as a benchmark value: 3.8 bar +/- 0.1 with a flow quantity of 80 liter/h. Hope it helps.
