  1. My car is a MY02 3.2S and lately, when idling, it will sometimes emit a low on/off 'moan' from the front, like a buzzer with laryngitis. What is she trying to tell me?
  2. I've posted on this problem before with no success so perhaps this time I'll be lucky. My MY02 3.2S with PCM1 spends considerable periods unused, and when I get back into the car the Cursor/Icon triangle in Nav behaves erratically, and revolves slowly in a 360 degree fashion. Eventually it may right itself, like it did before, but this time it's taking longer. Anyone have a suggestion. Will disconnecting the battery, and re-initialising the system help.
  3. schlerb, You didn't say what mileage is on the car. !! It it's high, it could be (read probably is) wear in both the starter pinion and the ring gear, bearing in mind that the motor will invariably stop in the same position almost every time, with the result that the starter is engaging on the same teeth of the ring gear time, and time again. This diagnosis will only apply to very high mileage. On the other hand a squeeling belt.....is a squeeling belt, while a rasping starter pinion, and ring gear is , eh........ a rasping metally sound. ........or it could be an elephant........is there a zoo nearby? hehe
  4. This was post number 6. Okay so it's officially called a PCV, yeah right...... but wasn't I on the money? Do I not win the prize?
  5. There was a guy on Ebay who did a range of plastic windows for soft-tops and the Boxster was one of them. I thought I had his info saved somewhere, but I just can't find it. His kit included everythig to the job yourself, with needle and strong stitching cord/line , and it seemed to be a great solution at a very reasonable price. Search/seek and you may find.
  6. Shawn, The comedians are so busy upstaging one another that they forgot the question, it always happens over the weekend.......too much beer. Haha I would hazard a guess at the gizmo being a 'breather/vent, or one way valve' type thing. probably on some of the pipes attached to the crankcase.
  7. What sound system is fitted to the car? If you have the full system, with mult-speakers, it could be the amplifier, which is fitted to the front bulkhead just above the spare wheel, as it comes to life, and energises the speaker cones.
  8. Since there is no loss of coolant, and no surge in the header tank with the cap off, I suspect that it's not coolant, but oil related. To be very sure of this get to the exhaust outlet, while a friend revs to the magical 4.5K ( but only do this when the car if fully warmed up). Determine if the cloud coming from the exhaust is water vapour of or oil. Your hand will tell you if is vapour, and you nose will tell you if it is oil burning as smoke. If it is smoke all is not necessarily lost just yet! Is the car possibly overfull of oil ? It does happen, and will manifest itself as smoke burn-off while driving hard. If it was seriously overfilled it could have created a few problems by finding it's way into a few areas where it shouldn't be. It could also be a dodgy oil seperator. It could also be a malfuntion in the breather system for the crankcase, which is allowing the air intake/induction to the inlet manifold(s) to suck up oil from the crankcase at higher revs. A visit to your nearest tech, be he (or she) (have to be careful not to offend) official or indy, would be recommended, and there might even be a firendly guru close by, (or not so close by), to whom a visit would be well worthwhile. There's only so much one can suggest from a different continent, over the internet, while a 'look see' might come up with something very evident. In the meantime don't go pulling out motors just yet.
  9. A quick substantial puff of smoke on startup, after the car has been standing, is almost always the result of one or more, bad valve stem seals. and seats, which allows oil to leak past into the cylinder, during the period that the car has been stationary for a goodly period of time. The culprit is your number 4 cylinder.
  10. Do you have to do a significant top-up of the coolant after a good hard drive when white smoke/steam/vapour is visible in rear view mirror? If the answer is yes then you are losing coolant either through a blown head gasket or maybe a cylinder liner. You can also do a simple test bu getting a friend to bring the revs up to your magical 4.5K level while you observe the coolant header tank in the rear trunk, and see doesw it begin to overflow of bubble up violently. The more scientific method is to get hold of a pressure test kit, which consists of a hand operated pump and pressure guage, which is screwed onto the top of the header tank/reservoir. You pressurize the system to the prescribed lbs per foot and see does it fall off dramatically. Do you have any droplets of water in the oil, which would appear on the dip-stick?
  11. Are you losing much coolant during the hard drive at 4.5K+ when you see clouds of white smoke/vapour? Does it require a serious top-up after that? Does the cooling system get excessively pressurised during that drive?
  12. I agree with Chris. Why would you think of revving a cold motor to the redline. That will eventually shorten the life of the engine severely.
  13. The excess oil doesn't sit in the sump of 986 S........it's a dry sump engine......and the quantity you're talking about here won't cause any problem.
  14. Will the Actron CP9135 OBD II AUTO Scanner read Boxster codes?
  15. I do believe there is one in what would normally be referred to as the transmission tunnel underneath.
  16. If I power-up the PCM 1 unit and leave the volume down I don't hear it, but if I switch off the head unit the sound will appear at some stage. I'm now convinced that it's 'static or unsuppressed break-through' (for want of a better tech description) coming through the amplifier and speakers. Can anyone confirm that the amplifier (mounted on the bulkhead wall above the spare wheel) stays powered-up even when the head unit is switched off?
  17. In the last few days I've noticed a very peculiar noise in my MYO2 3.2S Manual Boxster. Initially I though it was a sort of alternator 'unsupressed break-through' coming through on the radio, like you might hear if you weren't properly tuned to a station, but it can't be heard with the radio or CD playing. It also sounds like the hiss you might hear from a small roller bearing at high speed and appears to be coming from the area around the instrument cluster. It arrives as the revs drop below 2000rpm in any gear, and may well be there above that but perhaps the frequency is too high to hear it easily. Is there any taut cable coming from the engine bay that could acoustically carry a sound like this? It is definitely a 'head-scratcher'.
  18. I've just confirmed what I've always believed, i.e. that alternators are not capable of restoring a flat battery to top condition. During my flat battery episode two weeks ago I used just an ordinary battery charger with about 4 amps output to bring the battery up over a period of about 24 hours. The car started ok. but was cranking a bit slow. Since then I've driven the car for several hundred miles, and when cold was still cranking a bit slow. I received my battery conditioner/charger/maintainer. which I had ordered, and after about 18 hours of charge the batttery is now back at top charge. To anyone who leaves their car unused for extended periods I would suggest getting one of these maintainers which can be left connected.
  19. I've solved the problem ! For some unknown reason the door catch wasn't making a ground! I don't know how that can be, but when I connected the ground cable to the check strap on the hinge end of the door I got power to the switches, and managed to open the trunk. In order to avoid any repeat of this operation I've just order a CTEK Battery Maintainer, a very sophisticated electronic unit, which has received 'best buy' reviews in all motoring mags, and for the equivalent of about $35 will keep the battery in tip top condition.
  20. I've been away for a few months and suspected my battery would be very low on my return, and so was prepared to just open the hood and hook up jumpers before even trying to start. However the battery is totally flat and won't even open the hood on my MY02 Boxster S. I've pulled out the special 'Tab' in the fuse box and connect a 12 volt supply to it and the door catch but that's not working either and I can't understand why. This is the only way to access the front hood on this model. Can anyone suggest a reason why this connection in the fuse box is not working?
  21. Has anyone experienced this problem? The car icon (Triangle) in the Nav in my 2002 Boxster S PCM 1 keeps changing heading in a rotating manner. It's position is relative to geographic location but the actual icon triangle keeps rotating slowing in a random fashion. What to do ? Try and re-install software ?? What do I do insert Disc 1 ....and will it install itself?
  22. Valcax, If the center of your rear tyres is worn and the edges are still good then the pressures are far too great, and this is almost certainly the reason that the car 'spun off' in a curve in the accident you mentioned in an earlier post
  23. It very much depends on the type of roads that the car was used on. 74,000 Km is not really very high, and if it was on good surface motorway type roads then there is no reason to believe that the suspension is bad. Is the car handling badly? Are there noises (clunking noises) comijng from the suspension as you drive?
  24. In the real world trim is generally taken to mean interior and exterior embellishments, as in 'trimmings' ,but not necessarily relating to uprated engine size. Isn't the difference between a 986 and 986S a 2.7 versus a 3.2 engine with uprated brakes, i.e. the red calipers and thicker cross-drilled discs, siix speed box versus a five speed with the 2.7, etc., etc., etc., Oh and b the way......5 posts mightn't necessarily mean that a guy doesn't know what he's talking about !!
  25. By the time I see my car again it will have been sitting static ( without having been started or run) for about two months. I don't expect it will be flat but in case it's low in charge what's my best precaution? O.K. the remote locking will have gone 'asleep' after five days, so I need to get the key in the ignition pretty smartly before all hell breaks loose. If I do need to use jumper (booster) cables is there any DO's and DONT' for Porsches? Perhaps it's a good time to purchase one of the 'smart' intelligent chargers and put it on for a day or so ???
