  1. Yes, I should have stated "weld tee" as the inside branch connection is radiused. I used an L/d of 15 for the ell and 43 for the tee.
  2. FWIW I did some flow calculations assuming that the stock inlet fitting was a tee and the plenum was optomized as a 90 deg ell. At peak RPM there should be upwards of a 2 HP gain. I just don't believe how replacing the stock fitting with only the plenum will give the advertised HP increase.
  3. The Motor Mount is Boxster and the oil cooler looks like a 3.2. It looks like a 3.2 Boxster too me. That looks to be it: 3.2L Boxster. I guess the part number is for the head casting itself. The catalogue lists only complete head assemblies.
  4. Curiously, none of those numbers are listed in the 986 and 996 USA Genuine Parts Catalogues on-line at Porsche Technical Service Information.
  5. Hi, all. I realize that this is an older thread but I've searched through at least 19 pages on the subject and have not seen a good answer to my (and others') question. Specifically, can a GT3 rear sway bar be installed on a 2002 996 C2 and use the stock links? If the stock links will not work do they have to be lengthened or shortened? Thank you for your help.
  6. Could that mean that the seal leaks between its periphery and the cases and not at the crank?
  7. Well it turns out that one of the local independent gas stations can do smog checks (on the dyno). The operator was very helpful and knew about smoging Porsches. My car required only the test. I passed and was in-and-out within a half-hour. No hassles, no problems. I was charged $79.95 for the test and the certificate. 8. I have used Harry's in Pleasanton. They are Gold certified and have a test-only station as well. A few years ago, I got my '93 BMW tested from somewhere else and it failed, and then I took it to them and it passed. This year, I had to get my catalytic converter (same car) changed. Went to them (thru CAP) and no complaints. Thanks, akif. Does anyone else have a recommendation?
  9. Hi, all. My 2002 C2 is due for a smog check. Can any of you recommend at reliable smog check station in the Bay Area, preferably in the East Bay? TIA.
  10. Hi, all. Here is Greenpeace's response to the GT2. Not really. This is actually Porsche's response to Greenpeace. This appeared in the Monday, September 10 edition of "Stuttgarter Zeitung". The caption translates to: "The auto industry presents itself in Frankfurt as completely environmentally oriented. Porsche meanwhile shows again a HP-showoff, although Greenpeace recently lashed their cars as "climatic pigs". Those Swabians sure have a wild sense of humor. Dan ﬞ
  11. Yes, indeed. I have a video of someone in a Porsche following the Ring-Taxi. Sabine gets it up on two wheels with a full load of passengers. I wonder if they brought a barf bag!
  12. Yes, that would be the Ring-Taxi. It is 175 Euros per lap for three people. Just a little pricy.
  13. Hi, all. The wife and I will travel to Germany soon and I would like to drive a lap of the Nurburgring. Ben Lovejoy's website, http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/carhire.html, says that certain car rental agencies not only forbid driving their cars on the 'Ring but also will penalize you. We'll probably rent a car at the Stutgart airport. Do any of you have recent experience with driving a rental on the 'Ring. Can you recommend a rental agency? Are there agencies to avoid? TIA.
  14. Hello. The trunk lid of my black '02 had many dings and paint chips from stones. It looked like teen-age acne. Baron von Frier in Berkeley removed the lid, sanded it, and repainted it including clear coat for $900. The lid now looks like glass. I suspact a complete repaint would run $3000-$6000.
  15. You may have misunderstood my comment. The rev's are kept low until the engine is properly warmed.
  16. ... Would be nice if a major Auto Organization did a report on the quality of Porsche. ... Hi. A recent issue of Consumer Reports featured "The Best and The Worst" automoblies. Several times the issue stated that Porsche has bad reliability along with Mercedes and Audi/VW. BMW was rated as having "spotty" reliability (as was Nissan). Needless to say, Toyota and Honda had the best reliability. I guess CR missed the problem with blown Sienna mini-van V-6 engines due to overheating oil. FWIW: My 2002 996 has almost 52,000 miles on it. I purchased it CPO with 42,000 miles. I was able to obtain complete records for the car. The biggest repair was for a RMS at 32,000 miles. Both ends of the motor show the areas below the crank to be wet with oil (a film). Just after I bought the car I changed the oil and filter. A year later I changed the oil and filter at around 50,000 miles. The engine used only 1 bar on the indicator, about 4 oz.?,between changes. One thing I have noticed is to keeps the rev's down, < 2,600 RPM, until the engine reaches operating temperature. My '01 Boxster with Tip (sold to get the 996) shifted at this point and the underside of the motor was completely dry. I now practice this with my 996 and there are no drips. The one time I had to use more than 3,000 RPM with a cold motor resulted in several drips for several weeks. Since then, October, there have been no drips. Oh yes, both of my Porsches have the original -00 radiator cap. There have been no leaks or loss of coolent. My observation is to drive the car as a normal car with only occassional "hot-rodding". I remember reading a SAE paper many years ago wherein it stated that engine wear was proportional to the seventh power of the ratio of engine speeds. (5000/3000)^7=35.7 times the wear or shorter life. Dan
  17. That is exactly what I did - a quick check. Fortunately, no adjustment was required. Good luck to you.
  18. Hi, Stefan. I have the white tool and it will snap into place to check the adjustment without removing the console. Only the boot has to be lifted. The console will have to be removed to adjust the cables, if required. I have a 2002 6-speed with the stock shifter.
  19. While your new motor is certainly nice to look at, what is that motor behind it!? It looks to be a turbocharged 6 cylinder with the horizontal fan. 935, 936, or 965/962? Stop the presses... Upon closer inspection is that a motor from a 917/10 or 917/30? It is hard to tell from the angle but it looks to be a flat 12.
  20. Hi, guys. The wife and I are planning a trip to Italy for our anniversary. I am also planning a stay in Stuttgart to visit the MB and Porsche museums and, hopefully, a day trip to the Nurburgring. Expedia shows these hotels in the area: the Achat Hotel Stuttgart which is in Zuffenhausen and the Relexa Waldhotel Schatten which is located at the old Solitude track. Have any of you stayed at these hotels? Can you recommend other hotels or B&Bs? Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks. Dan
  21. Porsche recommends tires that are "N" rated, which is a special rating/testing process by Porsche. You do not HAVE to use "N" rated tires, but they are recommended by Porsche. Here is a link to the Tire Rack web site that explains the Porsche "N" rating process. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tec...e.jsp?techid=26 From the Tirerack link here is the meat of the matter: "...the tire manufacturers may also build other tires featuring the same name, size and speed rating as the N-specification tires for non-Porsche applications. These tires may not be branded with the Porsche N-specification because they do not share the same internal construction and/or tread compound ingredients as the N-specification tires." After reading about Porsche and tire development in "Excellence Was Expected" I think the N-rated tires are the correct choice.
  22. I appreciate your input. You are correct, there is a risk that the repair will be worse than the original problem. Sometimes I wish I could do the repair myself. When I raced motorcycles in the '70s I did all the engine and chassis work myself. The one drop per week is an average since July. Prior to July there was a weep but no drops. So, the problem is progressing. I am asking for input so I'll can minimize the risk when the time comes.
  23. Hello. My 2002 996C2 may be due for a new RMS shortly (about one drip per week). My choices of dealers are Stead, Fremont, and Oakland. Do any of you folks have any experiences with these shops replacing the RMS? My concerns are installing the seal dry, scratching the seal surface of the crank, not polishing the sealing surface if the crank is scratched. Which shop seems to be the most conscientious? TIA.
