  1. well BruceP? Can we get a verdict on whether your temps have settled down since Rad replacement? I have the same issue. High speed fans working fine, but temps rise to 102-108 consistenly in hot weather and stop/go traffic. Going to do the fan mod, but saw this thread and now it has me thinking after seeing the pics of your rads. I blew mine out a month or so ago and haven't seen any improvement in temps reduction. Found a small bit of damage on the lower corner of my rad and although not leaking i'm suspecting they might be corroded as they look a bit similar to yours. Feedback please!
  2. not sure how much time you have, but I stress you sort some of these things out yourself with the help of a few DIY writeups found on this forum. I don't want to sound critical of your INDY on his pricing, but several of those repairs/maintenance can be done by the in experienced joe with a bit of direction, courage and basic tools. Give it a go. 1. Do NOT let someone else change your polyrib belt for 250 bucks. Please don't do that. It will take you 10 minutes and cost you 60 bucks or less. 2. If you have or buy a lift and you can easily replace your brake pads and even rotors fairly easy. At least, the very least tackle the pads, but if you've gone that far the rotors aren't much more of a stretch to replace. (do you even notice "thumpiness" when braking?). 3. O rings on spark plug tubes - check out the Sparky Plug Change out DIY. A bit more advanced but still very doable. 4. Exellent Waterpump replace DIY write up here. Search, you can do this. 5. Bad valves and brake flushing you might want to let him tackle. These cars are Mr. Potato Heads. Components are easy to swap out with all the expert advice and great techincal DIY write ups you will have access here. Search and ask questions and you will be amazed and proud of what you can do....and save an unbelievable amount of money. Just don't be paranoid you will break your car. Courage, you can do it!
  3. for number 3 get a roll of quarter to half inch insulation tape..the kind you put around windows and lay it on the piece below your skylight window..the piece that the window sits on. That will take care of the noise.
  4. you probably have the older version tubes. Buy the new part numbered ones and replace. Easy writeup here, do search and have at it.
  5. again, they are close to each other and cost very little. As long as everything is out of the way and you are in there might as well replace both. Also, just be careful with the little black plastic tubes...they can be very brittle. I broke a section of mine, but was able to use some shrink wrap and repair it with no issues. I was replacing my starter motor at the time so i had the air intake, throttle body and alternator out of the way. Then had access to both the valves.
  6. check out pelican parts. Thats where I got both my electric and air change over valves. Might as well replace both while you have everything out.
  7. hots starting issues also can be the starter motor going south on you. I had mine display those issues for months until i finally swapped it out...pita btw. But a good several writesups on this forum will help you through if you are so inclined and the battery and ignition switch check out fine.
  8. to chime in here i would say with those codes and symptoms its a clear sign of cracked coils, but as you said they were recently replaced maybe just the coil leads/connection wires popped off or shorting out. Ensure all connections to coil paks "click" into place first. Then other routes can be looked into.
  9. Your key will need to be reprogrammed. Might even need a new FOB and then also have it programmed. Your processor might have finally kicked the bucket. Mine did, but i'm not going to throw 250-300 bucket to buy a new FOB and have it programmed, so i just manually lock/unlock my doors..caveman style:)
  10. for mine? no, the scavenger pump ceasing up would end it..not loose spark plugs
  11. okay, thanks for the details loren and 1999. I took off the front bumper this weekend and blew out the rads. Some debris, but not terrible. Put back together and it still seems to be running on the hotish side. 101 c intown driving on a cool morniing. And the engine blower fan did come on when i pulled the temp sensor connection off when car was up to operating temperature, and then turned off when i plugged back in. So everything seems functional. I think i'm going to wire up the engine box fan mod and see if that helps if not then it's on to chasing tails for a bit! lol
  12. gotcha, tu. I finally found the mysterious silver relay box! :)
  13. I have confirmed(i believe) that I have a dead engine blower fan. I disconnected the engine temp sensor plug with ignition on and no workie workie. How can i check the fuse or relays to make sure they are not the culprit before swapping in a new fan? I don't have much experience working with those relays, nor a relay layout/guide. TIA 1999 C4
  14. My VW 911 is hot hot hot! Now everyone i know is going to bring back that old line of a 911 being just a bug with a faster engine:( great. great
  15. glad he/you caught that it time...if you hadn't it would have been lights out for your 3.4
  16. i've run one for over a year now with no issues as well, but went back to stock. Feel better about it to as i'm not as worried about water infiltration and what not. I paid 330 bucks for mine and wouldn't say the noise dif was worth every penny. But maybe your setup was better. Anyhooo, jm2c
  17. hey dr914jr...what have you been charging to do these mount removal and press in's? I spoke with my indy today and he said he hasn't done them yet, but would love to do it for me. He's got several style presses so it should be easy for him. He wasn't sure about pricing yet. I would like to have a reasonable estimate in my mind so I can guage whatever he comes up with. TIA!
  18. listen to your mechanic. Save your time and money and stick with your stock air box. Maybe you can look at the bmc filters.
  19. okay, i see. Thank you for the run down. I appreciate it. I will follow your advice and see whats up. Plus I'm going to try and set up the rad and engine compartment fan mod that you posted.
  20. i know you are sure of that 1999porsche911, but what can i tell you, the fans are on low speed or off on intial check, then i get back into my car and press the ac button, come back out and the fans run high...so whatever that proves is really meaningless to me at this point. What i mean is i care about is if the fans are working, both high and low..and they are. So if my temps are still running high i have to figure out why and correct it. Sorry if this pushes a hot button for you.
  21. okay, been having temp issues myself. I replaced the resistors last summer because the low speed fans were not coming on. Tested today with ac on the fans blow hard. But when driving on highway the temp hack get as high as 103c. Around town with ac on and thus high speed fans the temps got to 105 and probably would have gone higher if i was driving around longer in town. So at this point i'm wondering if maybe it's time to blow out the radiator fins. Thoughts?
  22. sht, sounds dicey. The mount is only $100 so that vs $800 is a big difference. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for all the advice guys.
